McMillian (2015) explains that the decision for the participants should be a “sample that will adequately represent the population, so what is described in the sample will also be approximately true of the population” (p. 115). The administrators, students and the community all fit this description because they are all embarking on the journey of utilizing a year-round schooling program. The only ethic issues from this study are the location of the areas that are being studied. For example, the majority of the areas are in low income areas which could skew the results in either direction. Wildman et al., (1999) explain that year-round schooling could greatly benefit low income students who are not involved in Summer activities because their minds remain active and engaged during the Summer months. They also explain the negative benefit for low income students because the breaks that they have are significantly shorter (para. 5, 6). Each of these variables may different with a student group that is not in a low income …show more content…
The rights of the participants in this study were preserved because there only identification of the participants was in the schools that participated. There were no individual names or even scores reported in the study. Due to the anonymity of the reporting of the data that was reported each participant’s rights were unaffected by the study. Each of the researchers were able to remain unbiased because they were able to pair qualitative data with quantitative data to make their assumptions. Also the study was conducted by researchers that were not connected to the schools that were participating. No previously conceived notions were apparent due to the separation of the groups. The only limitations that are evident in this study are the fact that the schools present were only in two states. According to Rebecca Skinner (2014), there were approximately 3700 year-round schools in operation as of 2011-2012 (p. 2). Even though this study was done 15 years prior to Skinner’s (2014) report, it is reasonable to assume that there were more than five school districts that were operating on a year-round schooling
