Not having a summer break can also be a negative thing, though. Some people prefer to have a summer vacation, as it gives more time to plan large family vacations or reunions. However, year-round schooling is not as bad as most would think. With the two to three week vacations, families would be able to adapt to the schedule over the course of a year or less. There would still be the possibility of having larger activities, with a little more planning.
With year-round schooling, students and teachers would have medium sized breaks consistently throughout the year. These breaks could allow students to have time to unwind that is longer than a weekend, yet shorter than a large summer vacation. Having a consistent school calendar that lasts through all 365 days can help students retain knowledge. Forgetting information over summer vacation is often known as “summer slide” and year-round schooling can help prevent this. This type of schedule would also reduce the amount of time needed to recover and become accustomed to school at the beginning of each new year. A singular summer vacation sometimes can feel too long, or drug out if not enough has been planned. With shorter breaks, this would not happen and students would stay interested.
