"Don't fix what's not broken," is a great quote that makes sense of why year-round schools shouldn't be opened anymore. Both students and teachers lose quality family and friend time, along with countless other important activities. The traditional school schedule has done nothing to prove itself corrupt, and does not deserve to be changed, or replaced. With so many cons, and not enough sufficient pros, the idea of year-round schooling should never have even been presented in Michigan. Because of scheduling problems, loss of summer activities, less social benefits, and negative effects on student motivation, we should stop opening year-round schools in Michigan.

The long summer break, that gives students the opportunity to rejuvenate and get excited for the next year, is exactly what we need. Summer is the only time for kids in Michigan to really take the time to enjoy the sunshine, and experience summer in all its glory. "I like having a long summer. It gives me enough time to be excited to come back," said Marissa Granado, (Year-Round School) a ninth grader at a school considering changing the schedule. Losing the long summer would also take away many summer camp options for students. Some students have also commented on how all the little breaks in year-round schooling would hurt students and teachers sleeping habits (What). Many people forget that their is also negative academic effects of the year-round style, such as summer school for students that need extra help. Long summers give administrators, teachers, and students the extra time to hire new faculty, and catch up on possible schooling they need more help on. This is also a problem for the grades when they transition, summer allows for them to get ready and get school supplies. One of the biggest problems that comes to the table is the issue of not being able to participate in summer jobs, which is a students biggest income, and encourages tourism, especially in Michigan. It's said that during the summer students lose key information, that they will have to relearn in the following year, but is it actually that severe. Their isn't enough year-round schools to prove that they have better performing students than traditional school scheduled students, and even if new information surfaces, it wouldn't be such a serious pro that it would be better than traditional school schedules (The). With this information, or more so lack of information, it's clear that year-round schedules don't have enough facts and statistics to continue to be opened in Michigan.
To conclude, year-round schools should not continue to be opened in the state of Michigan for the many lost opportunities, and lack of pros on the other side of the argument.
