Each year, school districts are faced with a growing population of students. The issue with this is that many districts have a shortage of school facilities, and they are limited to the amount of money they can spend on each of these facilities. To handle this issue, school districts around the world have adopted a year-round school calendar to ensure they are using these existing school facilities to their full ability. Year-round schooling arranges the breaks differently, causing students to be in school all throughout the year, rather than having three months off in the summer. In addition to maximizing the use of the schools, year-round schooling improves student learning and saves money in the long run.…

The Benefits Year-Round Schooling Since the beginning of time, teaching and learning has been a detrimental part of what makes us able to innovate and experience the world around us. A form of schooling introduced in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s was a year round school system (Pedersen, "The History of School and Summer Vacation"). This system allowed for more days within the learning period and allotted for students to get more out of their education. Research from all the way back to a hundred years ago has shown that students tend to lose information and their footing during a traditional summer vacation (Fairchild, "Why and how communities should focus on summer learning."). The current system most public schools within the…

One obstacle would be the costs of year-round schools. Since the school, never officially has an off period, maintenance on the school buildings can be difficult. “Many argue that implementing year-round schooling would be too costly, as it would lead to increased spending on teacher and staff salaries…,” (O’Sullivan 411). Schools are already having to limit their spending and cut back on things that they don’t feel is necessary, but with the addition of these schools helping out in the long run on children’s education, then I think it's something that must be done. Another is that cities where tourism is high would not be in favor of this program due to the fact that less people would be vacationing during their peak months.…

Summer vacation is important for students who want a break from school. School causes stress for many students who try their hardest to succeed in academics. Taking away the one thing students look forward to, summer time, is a punishment to all in the school system. Switching to year-round school would cause students’ interests to decrease dramatically within the first year. Year-round school should not be endorsed because students would have more freedom, their sleeping schedules would be more flexible, and they would have more time for summer jobs.…

Many schools already struggle to pay teachers a competitive wage, making it hard to hire, and keep high-quality teachers. The cost of teaching as a full-time endeavor may not be feasible either locally or federally, especially if you want the children to have good teachers. Some supporters of the year-round system claim that it is better for people suffering from food insecurity, and that there are not enough summer eating programs. However, on the year-round system, there are just as many days out from school where these children have little to no food. That is moving the food around on the plate, and has no effect on these people's lives.…
