The percentage of public schools attending year-round school is 10%. Many people dispute on whether or not American schools should do a nine-month school calendar or a balanced calendar. The original schedule was implemented because children were needed to work in the fields during the summer. A balanced calendar should not be an option. One reason a balanced calendar shouldn’t be used because it increases expenses. A few increased expenses are for facility, maintenance, student transportation, and overall administrative costs. This extra cost could very possibly take away from other beneficial activities and programs that could be a useful asset to other students future’s. In addition to increased expenses, year-round school again isn’t

Each year, school districts are faced with a growing population of students. The issue with this is that many districts have a shortage of school facilities, and they are limited to the amount of money they can spend on each of these facilities. To handle this issue, school districts around the world have adopted a year-round school calendar to ensure they are using these existing school facilities to their full ability. Year-round schooling arranges the breaks differently, causing students to be in school all throughout the year, rather than having three months off in the summer. In addition to maximizing the use of the schools, year-round schooling improves student learning and saves money in the long run.…

It would be almost impossible to hire a teen for one month out of the summer because most businesses search for long-term employees. Also, parents that rely on that working teenager may struggle to get by if their child attends a year-round school. These are just some of the possible outcomes if schools choose to switch to a year-round agenda. This is unacceptable. Allan G. Osborne Jr., a retired principal of the Snug Harbor Community School in Quincy, Massachusetts, expresses that evidence for year-round schools that show improvement are sparse and many educators are reluctant to experiment with year-round school schedules (Osborne Jr. 28).…

Would year-round school or would normal school be more beneficial for students? Some people believe that year-round school is better and are thinking about changing their school schedule to year-round. The education system should change schools to a full year schedule because students get the same amount of time off, students wouldn’t forget information as easily, and students would have a mind of clarity. If schools switched to year-round school, students wouldn’t forget information as easily.…

At the beginning of summer many families are getting ready for vacations, camping, and more, but if there is year round schools, then they will have to put off family traditions and vacations they have been doing for years or have been looking forward to for a while, so they have to get rid of all that just for year round schooling, which just started. Also, what if the parents already paid for that trip? That wouldn't be fair for them to pay good money on a trip that the whole family wanted to go on, just for year round school. Now if they want to go on a trip it has to be planned around the school's…

Unlike most people believe, year round schooling is still in session for 180 days, with breaks occurring every few weeks (Yeager, "Year-Round Education Program Guide."). Traditionally, schooling for 500 students is $542 per student, while in a year round education, it would be $616 per student; however, for the enrollment of 635 students in traditional schooling is $515 per pupil, while in a year round system, it would only cost $490 per student (Yeager, "Year-Round Education Program Guide."). This is important because if we begin to implement a year round system, the cost would inevitably go down per student, thus saving money for other materials such as books, desks, or other necessary materials to help further the learning process. It is also cost efficient because vandalism and other crime rates tend to go down (Yeager, "Year-Round Education Program Guide."). This isn’t to mention the other areas of saving such as “capital outlay for additional facilities; avoided extra‐site operation and staffing, including classified, certificated, and administrative personnel, furniture, supplies and equipment, utilities and maintenance, and transportation.”…

Over the last few weeks as we have been discussing different research topics, we have covered ideas ranging from technology to government. So many different issues went through my mind, but only one stood out above all the rest as one that needs to be discussed more than it already is: education. Education is the system that teaches the people of tomorrow and therefore should not have problems surrounding it. One of the questions that surrounds education is long students should be in school. This issue of a year round school is the topic I have chosen and through some research already I can tell that this will help with future schools in deciding whether to have this school or not.…

With year round schooling, teachers will benefit too by earning more money each school year. For example, “During the summer, many teachers have to take on second jobs to supplement their loss of income (Research Spotlight on Year-Round Education).” This forces many to take lower paying jobs because there are very few education jobs during the summer. This leads to embarrassing and degrading moments for teachers when inevitably they have to wait on one of their students or their parents. In addition, “if schools were open year round, not only would teachers not have to work a second job, but they also see an increase in their yearly income (Research Spotlight on Year-Round Education).”…

Chen (2014) provides evidence that year-round schools do present benefits that would not be available on a traditional schedule and, even though schools would have to adjust, bring a form of regularity to the students, teachers, and parents that they never had before (para. 10). This goes to show that a year-round education calendar can work if the students and faculty agree to be out of their comfort zones for a…
