Introduction
3,181 schools in the United States run on a year-round schedule. This means those schools don’t have a 3-month summer vacation. Instead, students are in school for 45 days then have a 15-day break through the entire school year. With so many schools following this track it is easily assumed that it is a better choice than the traditional system. But, year-round schooling isn’t better. Many experts agree that year-round schooling can cause stress and frustration. This suggests that schools switch back to the traditional schedule. Year-round schooling makes it seem that school goes on forever and that can have a big impact on kids attitudes towards school. Year-round schooling causes kids to experience stress because of a lot of school days and almost no vacations. This causes students get stressed and in some cases dropout. This leads to parents struggling to find times during the year when the whole family can travel, or spend time together (Chen). Family is very important and year-round schools make it hard for families to be together and have fun. It is suggested that year-round schooling as the answer saying that students fall behind during the summer without practicing essential skills over summer break. Research from a century ago confirms the summer slide was and still is a major problem (Jcarinci). The lack of learning over the summer is causing kids to fall behind. This problem has been going on for a century but, year-round schooling can help kids get back on track. The problem isn’t only that kids are losing knowledge over the summer but how much. According to John Hopkins School of Education's report about the summer slide, most kids lose 2 months of learned skills in math over summer break (Oswald). This just shows that the last 2 months of school were worthless. Kids in year-round schooling will excel because teachers will spend more time teaching the children new things not reviewing prior lessons. On the other hand, a year-round school may prevent the summer slide but there are other options that can stop the summer slide without sitting in a classroom. One of which being a summer learning program like The National Summer Learning Association or NSLA. They did a study on teachers which found that most of them agreed that summer learning loss was a problem that could easily be solved if students

The traditional school calendar gives students 3 months of summer vacation, allowing students and teachers a much needed break. Some would argue that those summer months are the downfall to losing some of the material taught in the previous year of school. As stated in the previous paragraph, there is proof that students lose valuable academic skills during a traditional summer break. This results in an average of four to six weeks at the beginning of a new school year in a traditional schedule being spent reviewing the previous school years material. When in the year round program the short breaks allow for students to retain their academic skills, resulting in less time reviewing and more time spent learning new material. In fact this increase time spent learning new material showed that year round schools had a 2.79 higher math gain and 1.61 higher reading gain over traditional schools. This is critical because first off many students quickly bore while learning old stuff and this may be connected to the 3% higher dropout rate in traditional schedule schools then year round and also less time spent reviewing may play into the higher attendance rates in year round…

Children benefit from year round school because they are not in a hurry to cram everything they need to know for that year in just short nine to ten months. Teachers can slow their speed and actually teach students everything they need to know not just what they need for a test, which seems to be regular in many schools. Students will not forget the education that was taught, for they will not have summer vacation time to forget about school and what they learned from it. Cooper had done experiments on children loosing education while on summer break and his results are stunning, and cooper commented that “most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”…
