The idea of year-round school is foreign to most people and they become uneasy when the subject is mentioned. A modified year-round schedule means having longer breaks throughout the year and a shortened summer break. For instance, school would start in July and end in May. That is ten months of learning and two months of summer break. An extended school year, like every situation, comes with advantages and disadvantages. School’s genuine purpose is learning, and having more of it stretched over a year has great benefits.

According to a recent report by the Congressional Research Service, the number of year-round schools has increased by 764 school systems, 26 percent since 2007 (“Districts”). Year-round school allows students to be engaged in their learning for the majority of the year. Having frequent breaks dispersed throughout the year allows students and teachers to re-energize and recharge. Students are able to retain information better and focus more in class.
