Camps can change their offerings to take advantage of the shortened summer, along with increasing educational as well as recreational activities or market to specific schools affiliated with their client base (Marsh). Opponents of year round education often cite no significant difference in test scores after the implementation of a longer calendar (Dessoff 40); this is very short-sighted because the small gains which are seen in younger grades can amount to exponential increases once the child reaches high school. Along with year round education there are many more steps schools can implement to bring up educational results. Extending the school day is a low cost option, the day to day cost increases very little and the resulting increase in learning time is invaluable. By adding just 15 minutes to the school day will net seven extra days of instruction at the end of the year. Mandating after-school tutoring programs in economically disadvantaged areas would help all learners grasp concepts faster. This leaves summer learning sessions open to reaching students with special interests or exposing students to life skills and careers in addition to the time needed to rest and relax from school pressures. Increasingly, private dollars are being spent to provide more learning opportunities to children who would not normally be able to afford quality learning enhancement programs outside of school. One program in Indianapolis headed by Earl Phalen, a preeminent figure in educational innovations, leads the way for summer school by offering Summer Advantage. He has partnered with Mind Trust a local organization committed to raising funds for educational purposes and describes the course and its
