In the novel it explains, “‘Typically, each stage of simulation eliminates one or more of the fractions, but in your case, only two have been ruled out.’” ( 20-1.) This shows how what is going on with the main character, Beatrice, is unusual or wrong in a way. The quote also shows a tone that the character saying all of this to Beatrice, it creates a tone of confusion and she seems bewildered. The novel also goes on to say, “... under no circumstances should you share that information with anyone.” ( 22.) This definitely shows how the author is trying to develop a theme of how belonging in two different places is wrong in the society that they’re living in. Beatrice belonging in two different places seems to also lead to a conflict in the novel, showing that she shouldn’t belong in two different places.
Overall, the theme that is shown in the two novels is that anyone can belong in two places even if it’s considered wrong such as what was going on in The Year of Secret Assignments, and Divergent. Divergent, has one of the strongest opinions on belonging in two different places, belonging in two different places in Beatrice's society is very bad news and affects, not only Beatrice, but everyone around her. In The Year of Secret Assignments, it depends on who are the people around the main character and the way that they act. Truly anyone can belong in two place, but it depends on what places you choose to be
