Year Of Impossible Goodbyes Book Report

The memoir, Year of impossible goodbyes by Sook Nuyl Choi, is a story about the author herself. It's about how her dependence evolved through her stories that she tells in this memoir. Sookan demonstrates the changes in her dependence through three events, when she depends on her mother to keep her safe at Haiwon's birthday party, her first time alone at her school and her teacher her in the side with a ruler, as well as when Sookan and Inchun find that they are truly on their own because their guide is a double agent. At the start of the book, Sookan celebrates Haiwon's birthday without a care in the world. When the Imperial police barge in on their party, she completely depends on her family to keep her safe. She wishes she could go home so she can cry to her mother. But she can't. All alone, Sookan begins to realize that this may become frequent during the war. Sookan and Inchun travel across the border alone for most of the journey. Toward the start of the journey, the Russians take mother due to leaked information from the guide, who happens to be a double agent. Sookan and Inchun both have to travel the rest of the journey alone. "No mother, no money, no passport, I thought to myself. How are we supposed to go anywhere? So many thoughts went reeling through my head. I sat up and tears filled my eyes. I felt lost and abandoned. I didn't know what to do. Falling apart at the fact that she has no place to call home, no money, and no mother, she begins to lose a immense amount of confidence.
