The Year of Blandford “Everyone tell your name to five people that you have never met before,” said J.J. This was the start of a year that changed my life forever. Blandford forced me to make new friends, manage my time, and gave me the chance to do things that I never would have done before. I went to Blandford when I was in sixth grade, so it was only one year. At Blandford only sixty students were accepted, thirty in each class. For example, we had an event called International Night, this was an event that we prepared for by creating a poster about a country, each student picked their own country. This night required all students to make their own food from the country that they chose. For instance, I chose Finland and I had to make two dishes of Finnish food. We also practiced at school, dances that we would perform in front of everyone at International night. That night was very fun we ate a feast with 120 dishes to choose from and everyone enjoyed the dances that we prepared. At the end we all danced together, the two classes combined, and performed a foreign song and dance that meant goodbye. It was a fantastic

I slithered through the group of people crowding the fine arts room and sat in the back corner. I prayed that I would have an extra day to go over my video, that in my opinion thoroughly sucked. My peers started sharing their movies and I began drowning in my thoughts. “ Ripley Richardson, please come to the office” I was startled due to having my name called on the intercom to 2500 students.…

(CHALLENGE) I really started to struggle keeping my homework in line. I was used to having so much time to organize and complete my work; but now, I had basketball practices and games after school that consumed most of my time. A lot of nights I would have mental breakdowns due to stress. My homework also became much more demanding; College Algebra got more challenging week by week, Honors English papers required more time, and U.S. History current events were due every class period. My grades started to slowly slop downward.…

Needless to say my grades improved from this. I also began to be more interactive in my school by joining several clubs like Garland High School Marching M.O.B (Mighty Owl Band) and became more active in my community by volunteering to help local schools and soup kitchens such as Life Message. I 'm only young and in high school once so I decided to dedicate some time to making memories helping my school and local community. It was the beginning of high school, the start of a new chapter in my life; after coming into the school, the mall looked like the feeding of the five thousand. St. Thomas More has over a thousand students, and every single one was there on that first day, trying to find the way to their new classes just like me. Walking through the halls of St. Thomas More with the unfamiliar smell of the classrooms reminded me of what lies ahead. I thought it was going to be difficult, because I wouldn’t see anyone I know. Fortunately, some of my old friends from St. Pius were in my gym class, so I was glad that I would not be alone in gym class.…

The bell rang and the second quarter of my Kindergarten year at William Cullen Bryant Elementary ended. I grabbed my report card as I ran out into the light snow and spotted my mother's white 1997 Caravan by the stop sign, as usual. An enormous smile covers my face as I hop into the car, eager to show her I had prioritized my academics before sports, as she had asked me to. As soon as I was settled in, I handed her the envelope containing my pride. Proud of what I had accomplished, but to my dismay she gave me the “I’m disappointed look” and said, “Cullen”, her voice rising, “Why are there not one, but two threes on this report card?”…

“I never look back, darling! It distracts from the now.” “The Incredibles,” became a special movie for me after seeing it for the first time many years ago. However, what brings me back to this movie as a young adult is this line from Edna Mode that shows a philosophy I try to hold myself by today. With the onslaught of living with a depressive disorder that affects only 11% of adolescents in the US, and the challenges of finding a place to live while helping my single mom with my brother, I find that looking forward is the only thing I can do.…

I was born in the wrong century; a combination of an imperfect school education and broad parents produced a curious child who dreamed of many different occupations. Growing up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, I’ve seen interests and talents splattered across the entire state. There were Spring Lake Middle School sport coaches who researched different exercises for training players, cross country runners who dabbled in cancer research, and many more occupations. Thus, these people influenced my upbringing; and always pushed me to follow my dreams and to never give up. They see me at my low and always pushed me to my highest point.…
