Year 11: A Short Story

I wake up, tangled in blankets and sweating profusely. I try to catch my breath, but my breathing is so fast i feel as if my heart could beat right out of my chest. I flutter my eyes to try to clear the vision from my mind. My memory is still painfully clear; as if it was just yesterday when i was thrown into this downward spiral, and it's all because of one stupid incident, which i am destined not to forget. The very thought of the subject is enough to send my pulse into overdrive. Tossing and turning, I finally manage to get my mind onto another train of thought, and my breathing slowly returns to a somewhat normal state. I sit up and unravel myself from my cocoon of quilts, brushing my boy-short messy hair off of my face. In one unsteady movement, I swing my legs around and scramble to my feet. Somehow I am able to stand semi-upright- despite my whole body shaking uncontrollably. …show more content…
It's my first day back at school since the incident; and my first day of Year 12 in college. As if that wasn't enough to be worrying about, I have to try and keep up with my coursework, despite missing the last two months of Year 11. I would have liked to leave school after my GCSEs, but I wasn't focused enough as I had missed so much school, and in the end my mum forced me to stay on and do my A-levels, much to my discontent. My older sister, Nina, passed her A-levels with flying colours two years ago, and she's in the middle of doing a nursing degree, so I guess her success has set the bar high for my brother and I. It's not that i'm particularly bad at school, and i'm definitely not a troublemaker; but i suppose I've just not been bothered. Studying? No thanks, I'd much rather be scrolling through memes on the internet for a few hours. I think Mum thought that it would be different now that i'm 16, but i'm the same person; and that will never

For me personal I would choose the essay because it delivers the author's message. The main message in this story is survival requires courage, strength, and cunning. This is a true story about what happened to Andrew Lam and his life in the refugee camps. In the essay Andrew says “When I was eleven, about your age, I too fled from my homeland with my mother and sister and grandmother when the communist tanks came rolling into Saigon, Vietnam. We ended up in a refugee camp in Guam.”…

I lay there, panting and sitting straight up. I couldn’t seem to calm down so I decided to focus on my roommates still sleeping like logs. I watch as the silver moonlight filters through a window at their sleeping figures, simply inhaling and exhaling gently. I watch them like a creep for a few minutes until I hear a creak and a small thud followed by someone groaning “Ouch.”…

The short story "Eleven," by Sandra Cisneros, follows a young girl named Rachel through her thoughts on her eleventh birthday. Throughout the story the author uses syntax, diction, and imagery to bring Rachel's character to life and help the reader understand her. When the story begins the author uses syntax to immediately Rachel's character. The first paragraph is "all over the place," beginning with Rachel going on and on with a very lengthy explanation about being eleven.…

During the course of me starting school back in 20012, my mother’s health began to fail. She was a double amputee and developed several major issues with her heart. At first it seemed like I would be able to handle taking care of her and juggling school, but also in the same time frame my sister was having some hard times and I had to gain custody of my niece. Ill-fitting blue jeans are the bane of my existence. From here on I will never squeeze myself into a pair of jeans for as long as I shall live. Introduction When I was on a train, I started a conversation with a woman and excitably described a new state of mind. I told her my life had improved after I employed a different system of thought. At the beginning, she was dubious of my motives and asked “You’re not a scientologist, are you?” My mental fog had cleared, a metaphysical understanding took its place and our brief conversation influenced me to find more ways to articulate it. The initial reasoning behind this report was to have my own reference for a discovery that’s helped - helping to shape my personality.…
