As a first generation college student in my family, I do not have anyone to turn to for educational support. So far I’ve worked hard to graduate from high school a year early and start college. I am a hard worker and a leader and I am determined to achieve my dreams. Through the support of America Needs You I know that I will have mentors that can help me reach my ultimate goal.
When I was fourteen years old, my family and I had to travel from New York to Yemen. We went to visit my sick grandpa. During that time a war broke out. Daily I heard people crying but never saw the faces of those weeping. Every day I saw bloody people on the news, but I thought that those people were just acting and they will soon get up. Until one day I went to the grocery store. As I walked I heard bang bang bang, I knew that the war was starting again and that the fighting was near me. I ran home among the crowd of terrified individuals, some were falling to the ground dead. Others stopped to help their loved ones. When I arrived home there sat a crying mother, finally I saw the face of those who cried. She cried because in her hands she held her young child who was bleeding profusely. I stood there in panic, and useless; I heard bang bang, I remembered I was still in danger and ran into my house. It was the most terrifying moment of my life.
