Yasin's Claims Of Discrimination

Improved Essays
According to Robinson-Wood (2017) “some students of color could not relate to Yasin’s claims of racism because they have asserted that we are all Americans” (p. 186). Other reason students may not validate what yasin is saying because the students might not recognize discrimination. Discrimination can come in many forms; for example, discrimination can be overt or obvious. Discrimination can also be subtle and often difficult to detect. Many people think discrimination does not exist if it was not intended, or if there were other factors that could explain a particular situation. The administrators are unable to validate Yasin as they may have limited knowledge of multicultural competencies. The school should have a culturally competent

Deena Prichep’s “A Campus More Colorful Than Reality: Beware That College Brochure”(National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, December 29, 2013) is a small article that shines light on a problem dealing with how College brochures target and sell diversity to attract more students, to seem more diverse and most importantly “miss the mark” on diversity. Prichep talks about how a picture of an African American student by the name of Diallo Shabazz was photoshopped on the cover of an Admissions booklet. “Shabazz remembered seeing a cover shot of students at a football game. But he’d never been to a football game” said Prichep when interviewing Shabazz. The article focuses on whether or not this action taken by hundred of colleges, not only this…

With the relevance of racism in the modern day, the question is raised if whether or not treatment of minority peoples in the world has changed throughout history. Originally, schools would be segregated to either all white or all black. Over time, schools began to become integrated and minorities started mixing into the all white schools but these black children were still harassed and treated badly. However, people were against integration and many races are still looked down on. Some might say that racism is an old subject and is not around anymore.…

I believe that it was unfair that the teacher, Alan Barron, was suspended. Mr. Barron was only doing what he thought to be moral when showing the students about the extent of racism in the past. This is a significant part of history and this teacher was doing his job by displaying an example that he felt will better explain their current chapter/unit. The video that Alan Barron showed to the students was to show them how the white people disguised themselves as African- Americans which was a way of mockery. In the past, white people viewed themselves as superior to black people, because of slavery which enable the white slave owners the right to have possession over the African-Americans.…

Personal Attack is defined as attacking the person personally rather than dealing with the issue. Rather than having logical evidence which supports a particular theory pointing to personal characteristics, whether true or not to support an idea. Without even understanding what happened the teacher blamed the black girl for starting the fight by stating, “Because she is African American, and raised in an African American society, she is more likely to be a more aggressive individual, because they believe it is acceptable to fight all the time anyway.”…

In “Success and Failure: How Systemic Racism Trumped the Brown v. Board of Education Decision,” Joe Feagin and Bernice Barnett introduced and examined the concept of systemic racism and how it applied in the supreme court ruling during the Brown v. Board of Education case. Systemic racism is defined in this article as discriminatory practices that deny Americans of color the dignity, opportunities, and privileges available to whites individually and collectively. Feagin and Barnett also state that systemic racism involves the racialized exploitation and subordination of colored American by white Americans. The authors express that as long as there is no pressure forcing change from any other sources, systemic racism will always be present.…

Everyday when a kid walk down the hall their peers are judging them. Before a student does any work for class the teacher already has a prejudice against them because of societal stereotypes that have been imprinted on us. It is not to say that there aren’t exceptions to this claim but, there have been plenty of stories that have experienced it firsthand or witnessed it. Racism is prevalent in schools and therefore, it is prevalent in our every aspect of our lives. People can say they are colorblind but, being colorblind doesn’t help against the problem of racism.…

Historical relevance Brown vs. Board of Education, 1954, was decided six years before my birth. By the time I began kindergarten in 1966, schools in the South and in Chicago were still segregated. Mandates to ban “separate but equal” schools were of little consequence to the thousands of school age youth who had to attend schools on the South Side of Chicago. “Willis Wagons “ were brought to Black schools to manage overcrowding. Chicago Public School Board president Willis sought to remedy overcrowding by delivering mobile classrooms on playground and parking lot spaces at Black schools.…

February 7th, 2016 there was a stabbing in Cazenovia, a student of ethnic diversity was stabbed behind subway around 2am. On the 9th, a racially slurred, inappropriate, and hurtful Craigslist response was posted online that went viral within the community and many black people expressed they have not felt safe since. The following day, the campus held a dialogue circle to discuss race and diversity, sadly the majority of people who attended were ethnic minorities and the few white people in attendance were mostly student leaders. In class, Thursday, February 18th, we discussed civil rights, social rights, political rights, and slavery. In lieu of recent events and our class discussion on Thursday it is important to discern the difference between…

18 years. That is the average age of a child once they complete their mandatory schooling. Children as young as 5 begin their schooling with Kindergarten and thus begins an era of schooling that lasts a little over a decade. To many minority children, schools and the school experience in general, is a reflection of the impacts that race, class and sexuality have had in their lives. In the book, Rolling the R’s, R. Zamora Linmark uses contradictions in the schooling experience of Edgar and his classmates to make a larger commentary about the existence of education as a contradictory colonial institution where societal norms are enforced as well as differences.…

Nowadays, there are more and more immigrations in every country. Some of immigrations are for working, and some of them are for marriages. These immigrations might have their children, and these children also need to go to school. However, some of these children face discrimination at school. In the article “How Young Children of Immigrants Face Discrimination at School” (2015) by Janie T. Carnock, the author argues that young children of immigrants encounter discrimination at school, and young children are easily influenced in the early grades; they are discriminated by staff and students who are in the same age with them.…

So. What’s to be done? History has proven that addressing phobias, prejudice and discrimination by attempting to change concrete operational thinking is ineffective. Consequently, if America is to effectively address the issue of racial profiling and discrimination against South Asians, or any other group, our country must support initiatives that help youth develop the formal operational thinking abilities necessary to recognize when they are interacting with concrete operational thinkers and understand the limitations of reason in such interactions.…

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate from young age , and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite” (Mandela). The act of racism and inequality within the school system can be dated back to 1896 with the Plessy V. Ferguson case, which resulted in “ separate facilities for education” and an “ equal education”(123helpme). The lack of cultural diversity and ignorance exist all around us within today's society.…
