Yarhouse And Sells: A Comparative Analysis

I believe the two concepts are similar in that they are both referring to the relationship of humanity with God, self, others, and the environment (Maturana, 1988; Yarhouse & Sells, 2008). The two concepts however are also different. Shalom refers to the quality of the relationship, “living in proper relationship” (Yarhouse & Sells, p. 24) . Shalom has an implication for the here and now as well as for the future. Yarhouse and Sells use an image from Wolterstorff’s book Until Justice and Peace Embrace to highlight the Shalom that is possible to be experienced in the here-and-now is not complete. They speak of the time, when Shalom will be complete, when humanity “will no longer flee God down the corridors of time” (Yarhouse & Sells, p.24). …show more content…
237), I would say that I agree because the Gospel message is the embedded in love. As Christians, we believe that it was God’s love for humanity, that led him leave heaven, and become human in order to reconcile us back with God. Additionally, I wonder if this statement is also alluding to the passage in Matthew 22 where Jesus answers the question regarding the greatest commandment. In answering the question, Jesus explains that “the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (verse 40), referring to loving God and loving our neighbors. I believe we continue to reflect God’s love when

No other reason can explain why “God reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ (2 Cor. 5:18 NLT).” Likewise, the anthem that continuously peals from the Bible is that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son (John 3:16 NLT).” And yet, this does not mean that God loves us considering Christ died for us. Rather, Christ died for us considering God loves us.…

Love is considered one of the greatest paradoxes in Christian life. Is it for good or for ill we offer our hearts to one another? As C.S. Lewis notes in The Four Loves, Saint John teaches that “God is love,” thus to love is to experience a more intimate relationship with God. However, passion left unchecked festers like a sore. “We may give our human loves the unconditional allegiance which we owe only to God.…

In June 2016, a man shot 49 people at a gay nightclub. The terror attack had such a horrific outcome that at the time it was the worst attack on the United States since 9/11, both attacks rooted in hatred. In the literary works, Symposium by Plato and Metamorphoses by Ovid, the narrators contemplate whether love acts as the disease or remedy for society and the individual. These themes still have an importance in today's society, as acts of hatred still permeate through the fabric of humanity tearing apart any hope for universal peace and happiness. By studying these ancient texts, a fuller understanding of love and how to apply it to modern life can aid in eradicating bigger societal issues, such as the bigotry that caused the mass shooting…

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” This quote came from Jesus, and it is written in John 13:34-35. The land became cursed and man’s relationship and shalom with God had become severed. However, not all hope was lost as God promises in Genesis 3:15 that someone will come to “crush (Satan’s) heel” and rebuild what has been broken. This person is Jesus Christ, whose perfect life qualified him as the son of God to pay for the sins of mankind and defeat sin and the grave. In the book, “The Market Revolution”, by Charles Sellers, Seller talks about the period in American History from 1815 to 1846. Seller refers to this time period as the “Jacksonian America”. Sellers main argument is that the major social revolution, created by capitalism, that occurred after the War of 1812 caused American politics to turn from constitutional republicanism to a more democratic way of politics. He believes Jackson was a main reason for this change in American politics. Jackson’s main policies consisted of breaking down the Bank of the U.S., the achievement of extending the voting right to white men without power, and rooting out all corruption in American politics.…

The theme of love lies at the heart of the Fourth Gospel, pervading every aspect of the book. The Synoptic Gospels focus on the theme as well, but in John’s Gospel Jesus directs his disciples to love God and their neighbor, based on Deuteronomy 6:4–5 and Leviticus 19:18. In John’s Gospel, Jesus’s only command for his disciples is to love one another (15:12), and he assures the reader that God loves those who keep his commandments (14:21, 23). John points to Jesus’s death as an example of the type of love that Jesus expects his disciples to have (cf. 3:16; 15:13). Love in the Gospel of John argues that to understand John’s concept of love requires understanding more than what Jesus taught in the Gospel.…

I have learned from reading this section that the Bible is not all good news. If we want to live through the Gospel, we have to realize that sometimes things don’t go our way. Although, that’s a part of living through God’s words and responding through faith. I have realized that God plants good and bad things in our lives for a reason. I believe that viewing our lives and everything else in light of the gospel, we will commit to living ever-mindful of the love of God.…
