Everyone’s personal beliefs link to his or her behavior. Children are observing and learning from their parents at a very early age, and this helps cement their beliefs and influences their behaviors. Everybody has beliefs that they will defend very strongly and these are predominantly the principles that shape their conduct. A certain an individual does not believe that there is a higher power. If there ever were a discussion or argument about this, he would conduct himself in a way that shows others his viewpoint about a higher power. Beliefs can also shape how a person perceives reality. If they do not believe that they can acquire a certain job, per say, they will not put forth energy to try when an interview comes around. Martel writes about how hard it is to keep strong in a person’s belief but how it can influence them for the better. Because of Pi’s strong faith in his religions he is able to over come a Bengal tiger and finds a new appreciation of life. Although Pi has many beliefs his strongest is his belief in certain religions. Pi’s religious background is Hinduism. Pi becomes a Hindu when he is very young because his Aunt Rohini takes him to a Hindu temple to go through the ritual of becoming a Hindu. As Pi grows up, his personal beliefs start to transform him as a person. The first religion that Pi’s curious behavior discovers is Christianity on a family vacation. Although he is wondering what the religion is really about, Pi is still wary because of the way the Christian God saves His people. Pi’s natural and curious behavior causes him to come back to the church many times though: “The more I learned about him, the less I wanted to leave Him” (1.17. 63).
