Yanek: A Brief Summary

Decent Essays
Yanek is running home to his family to the noise of gunshots behind him. Ever since the germans have taken his town the germans have been shooting all of the jews and taking them to work for the germans. Soon Yanek will be taken to a concentration camp in a different town that the germans already took. All of the jews are taken by train for days. Will yemek even make alive? Will he get enough food?
I really liked this book because I like war and survival books. He really has to take all things for granted if he wanted to survive. If i were in that situation I would take all I can and run away in the woods before the germans got to my town. I liked how yanek was helping other boys his age and that the other boys did not know it was him helping.

In a study observing the culture and history of the Yanomamo, findings from anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon reveals how violence can create new allies. For decades, the men of the Yanomamo “fought like bands of brothers” as they raided villages and killed. The alliance is created when a pair or party of warriors from different communities frequently meet and kill together; in doing so, the pair or group is more likely to move into the same village later. As a result from working to raid a village together, the benefit for the warriors is the opportunity to marry each others’ sisters and daughters. The Yanomamo culture views true kin as being on the paternal side, whereas maternal relatives are considered to be associated with another group.…

Him joining the army was a result of his mother telling him that he should never run from battle. “‘I don’t know what else to tell you, Henry, except that you must never avoid your duty, child. If a time comes when you have to be killed or do a bad thing, Henry, don’t think of anything except what’s right.’”…

11/25 I stopped my reading for one day to relax my mind; I was unconsciously effected by the war Ishmael was in. I detested the rebel who killed his family, friends, and country. The war between the government and the rebels ruined the citizens peaceful lives. Families were separated, and children were brought to fright against their friend in different sides. Most children who became a soldier were either killed others or be killed by others, for most of them turned to be indifference, addicted with drugs, and killed more people for the joy of violence; Ishmael was one of them.…

The book “The Things They Carried” helped me sharpened my “humane imagination” because it made me realize about the importance of background before doing something, the respect of different ideologies of others, and also the importance of self esteem and not do something based on others. Even though the situations in the book are from a war, most of the stuff can be related to daily life and after reading this book my opinion about values, feelings, and thoughts about others changed. A way in which the book changed my mind is by realizing how important are the opinions of others to them. Before going to war many people have the debate of whether going or not and many of them made their choice based on the opinions of their families or friends as in the quote “I was afraid of walking away from my own life, my friends and my family, my whole history, everything that mattered to me. I feared losing the respect of my parents.…

In his book, All Quiet on the Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque is characterizing a young generation who lost everything in the Great War. He describes how Paul the main character, and his comrades perish one by one to the brutality of the war. The author describes how they become more dehumanized, as they fight endlessly for nothing. Because in many of the fiercest battles of the war, there is hardly any territory won or lost, yet the casualties are huge. Finally, the book has an anti-war message prevalent throughout as strong theme.…
