The Compound

The book "The Compound" written by S. A. Bodeen is narrated by a boy who has been living in a compound with his family for six years. The Yanakakis family is brought into a custom made nuclear compound by their wealthy father, Rex. Rex had brought his family (including Rex, his wife, two twin sons, two daughters, and his mother-in-law) out on a camping trip, which was pretty close to their compound. During the trip, Rex rushed his family into the car with the news of a nuclear attack on the United States. But one of the sisters had brought a cat on board with them. Eddy, who was one of the twins, was allergic to cats. So, the grandma had to go back to the RV to get his allergy medicine. Little did they know, Eddy snuck into onto

The rest of the family had arrived at their compound, but was forced to shut the doors, or else they would've all gotten killed by the bomb. Six years had past in the compound and they were supposed to stay in there for fifteen years. Rex set up everything they would ever need. Fifteen years worth of food, clothes, air, and a high power water filter. Everything was going good for Rex's plan, until Eli, the narrator had found his brother's old laptop that his dad put in his room years before. Eli decided to get on the laptop and tried to connect to Internet, even though he was sure it wouldn't work he tried out of force of habit. Sure enough, there was a connection. There couldn't possibly be internet connection. He got suspicious and he looked to see if any of his friends were on. His brother that had "died" was online. He communicated with his brother and found out that there wasn't really a nuclear attack. That their dad set it all up, his accountant, Phil, was in on it too. Phil told the world that the Yanakakis' had died in an RV accident, all except the grandma and one of the brothers. Eli instantly knew that he had to get out of the compound. So he tried to get more information about what was going on, and he told his mom about his conversation …show more content…
So Eli tried to spend more time with his father. Eventually Rex told Eli that he was planning on cloning a human being. Eli didn't accept what he was doing so he had to act fast. His dad, actually got sick not too long after that from a disease in the flour. And they figure it was the perfect time. His father told him that there was a code to unlock the door to the compound. Eli had to use everything that he knew about him and his father's experiences to figure it out. Eli was shy and quiet, so his father sort of made a treasure hunt of clues for Eli. Rex used things that he thought Eli wouldn't see. Eli figured out the code and had to fight his dad to get to the door and enter the code. Once Eli opened the door, Phil was coming up in a helicopter. Phil had a self destruct remote to blow up the compound. Eli tackled Phil and in the middle of it, the button was pressed, and Eli had ten minutes to retrieve his family from the compound. He had to carry his ill, pregnant mother out while rushing the rest of the children out. They all made it out of the compound except for Rex, who was brutally blown to bits. The family was later reunited with the grandma and the brother when search parties had arrived to look
