Bob’s issue seemed to be that he did not see himself as others might. Because of this, Bob could have gotten more defensive and may have shut down, which could have made him feel as if he was not part of, or accepted by the group. This in turn could have provoked him not to come back. Bob may not have been ready to face his issue and may have had subconscious resistance so instead of dealing with his issues, “why women perceive him a certain way,” he could have found it easier to just quit the group. Contrast horizontal disclosure with vertical disclosure you observed in terms of behaviors and group consequences. Make sure to define/describe horizontal disclosure and vertical disclosure in your response. Vertical disclosure is a method that an individual utilizes to self-disclose particular matters about themselves or an act that they performed in detail, and usually refers to something that took place in the past. On the other hand, horizontal disclosure stands as a meta-disclosure; where as an individual reveals how it felt to disclose something about themselves, and how they felt in the here and now about disclosing. For example, as Dan disclosed about why he was late, what it was like for him to grow up, and why he was in therapy, he talked about specific details from the past (vertical disclosure). To explain his tardiness, he talked about what it was like at his work with emergencies, not rushing the filling of a cavity, and his scheduling. Dan did discuss his feelings that he had in the past about growing up in an alcoholic family and how he felt “uncomfortable” in school because of it, but his disclosure was content driven on past issues.
