YA Interview Assignment

For the YA Interview assignment, I chose to interview one of my mom’s coworker’s sons. He is twelve years old and attends the 6th grade at Kinder Middle School. Something I learned during this interview about this student was that he is very passionate about reading and enjoys doing it rather than looking at reading to be more like a chore. Whenever I asked him if reading was something he enjoyed doing he responded with “Yes, I enjoy reading. Something else that I also enjoy about reading are the visual images I am able to make when I read a story.” This child not only reads at school to complete assignments but also spends free time at home reading. At home his parents are not much of big readers, he said his dad does not do much reading unless it is on Facebook, this made me chuckle. His mom has a kindle and reads during her free time. Whenever I asked him if he considered himself to be a good reader he said, “Yes I do because I read the most books in my class!” He also stated how he remembered back in lower grades he would be sent home with a short story and had to see how many words he could read in one minute and he would always get a high amount of words so that indicated to him that he was a pretty good reader. He also mentioned how AR test are something that really encourages him throughout the year to keep reading. When I asked him if he thought reading was important he said “Yes because without reading you wouldn’t know how to do a lot of things.
