Xperimental Dance Concert

My experience presenting choreography and performing in the 2017 Xperimental Dance Concert was challenging, yet stimulating. I believe choreographing for any type of venue is an intimate and vulnerable task, and this venue enabled the audience to witness every aspect of the pieces in the concert from many diverse angles; which caused many choreographers, including me, to feel a little anxious about presenting our works. Although I felt apprehensive about the intimate space, I recognized that this concert was unlike any I had performed in previously because the space was not in a normal proscenium set up, and I believe I let that idea influence my experience. For example, I was able to interpret my piece in a unique way because I thought about …show more content…
Initially, when I developed it, I intended for my final piece to be in the proscenium; but, the 2017 Xperimental Dance Concert was in the round, which meant that audience members observed my movement from various angles. I also did not realize when I created this piece how significant my circular movement motif would become, and how the piece itself would benefit from audience members sitting in the round. For example, most of my circular movements comprise of running in circles, allowing my body parts to initiate circular motions from the hips, circling the head, circling my ribs, circling my feet, or circling with small motions of my hands. The circular motif in and of itself is very welcoming when audience members sit in the round because they can see me from all angles and facings. I believe I was able to fully achieve the intention for my piece because of the way the audience members were …show more content…
The circular motif worked so well in this concert because it permitted me to change facings throughout the course of the piece, and all of the audience members had an opportunity to see my full body in the space. This particular aspect of my piece made my work unique and appropriate for this concert venue. I feel as though my final product was much better than I originally anticipated; and therefore, I enjoyed creating my piece as well as performing it in the space as a soloist. If I could do it all again, I believe I would consider a different costume. Although I enjoyed my costume because I believe it showed an appropriate amount of skin, I think the costume did not fit as well on the top of my torso. Additionally, I believe I would continue to adapt the movement such as: including different motifs or adapting the middle portion of the piece. I may consider cutting the middle section of the piece or even utilizing different timing efforts or facings. I would also consider performing the piece in different venues such as on a larger stage, or even outside on the patio in front of Pao. I may also consider adding more bodies to the piece which I believe may change the piece considerably because the different movers will embody the movement in their own

Jonathan Muñoz-Proulx’s direction brought Circle Mirror Transformation to a sweet spot between real and surreal. Annie Baker’s true-to-life writing style was taken and injected with movement to spark the creative mind. An ever changing stage was a clear foundation for the experimentation. Additionally, more movement between actors effectively clarified relationships and the tone of the play. However, with some major and minor tweaks to clean up Jonathan’s actor’s patterning and adjust the space’s architecture, Circle Mirror Transformation could be impactful by playing even more with imagination and what is literally being done for the sake of clarity.…

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting the exhibit Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes, 1909-1929: When Art Danced with Music at the National Gallery of Art. But this was not my first experience with this exhibit, no for I had the opportunity to perform in honor of this exhibit this past summer where I performed right outside the entrance the to the showcase. I performed the roles of the Faun in Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun, and Prince Ivan in The Firebird.…

My piece is called “Mixed Emotions”,and it is a story that is about how a mother ,which is me ,has been diagnosed with cancer her three kids does not have strong relationships between each other, which is going to play a big role throughout the dance. This piece was influenced by the movie The Madea Big Happy Family. This dance is representing the part when the mother finally told her children that she has cancer, and it was a kind of struggle to get them all on the same page because they are not the typically children who can be in a room and communicate about anything. That will play a big part too because the mother is trying to get them to come together before her time is up. Then when she tells them they all start showing their emotions in their different ways based off…

The Sweetheart Concert performed by The Virginia Ballet Theatre under the direction of Ricardo Mendelez was on the 26th and 27th of February 2016 at The Roper Theatre. The intent of this performance and the name of it clearly influenced one another because of the attempts at courting in the Pas de Fiancée and the “lovey-doveyness” of Vivaldera. There were stunning scores written by Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi along with breathtaking costumes from the Royal Ballet designed by Jean Percival and by the company’s director, Ricardo Mendelez. In the theatre, Todd Rosenlieb and Ricardo Mendelez had a period of discussion with their audience members before the performance.…

In dance, it is imperative that dancers use expression and acting. A dance should tell a story and evoke feelings in the audience without a script, just movement. It is often paired with music to enhance the dramatic aspect of dancing. Countless choreographers such as George Balanchine and Martha Graham are known for being artistic and dramatic in their movements (“Martha Graham: The Mother of Modern Dance”). Dance originated as a performance for an audience, not being judged at competitions.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

Opening night, the dancers that performed in the University Dance Theatre production, had talent, agility, and graceful movements. The concert had a variety of dance genres, visual appeal, and emotions that each piece and the show overall represented. Humor, drama, and serenity were not emotions I thought I would receive while watching these dances. One thing I did not realize would make many of the pieces was how crucial and reliant lighting and graphics were necessary to make the piece more visually interesting. However, I was excepting similar dances and movements; even if, some pieces had comparable choreography and emotional appeal the diversity stood out.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
