With nearly 91% of today’s children ages two to seventeen playing video games, one can see that technology is influencing our kids dramatically (CNET).Video games on phones, iPads, and additional games are mainly stationary games that seem to be making many of today’s kids less active and less social as their eyes are glued to their devices. Unlike a gaming systems such as the Wii which only senses the remote moving, and can easily be fooled into saying one is moving, Xbox has created the Kinect which uses motion sensor cameras that allows users to be more personally interactive with their games and other people as the user is the “controller”(CNET). There are not necessarily games called social improvement for the Xbox, but rather the games improving the physical and mental health stem into helping out the social life also. Because technology has had so many kids glued to their cell phones and other devices, many kids are losing their social skills. They do not know how to interact with other kids well or are socially awkward because their self confidence has been belittled as no one talks to each other because they are constantly on their devices. Although many pieces of technology is hindering, the Kinect has helped some kids in building self confidence. If a child is shy in class and does not understand something, he may be afraid to ask the teacher questions. With the Kinect, parents can now buy games for their kids to play that will help teach math skills, word use, and motor skills in various ways to guarantee the child will learn. Having learned some skills, the child may be more likely to now have the courage to speak up in their classes because they now feel more comfortable with that topic. With playing the Kinect’s exergames, it can help provide a better self image, giving them a new confidence to be more social. Lastly, the Kinect’s dancing games provide a fun activity for kids and teens to play with their friends at home.
