“I could, but some of those bastards would get away.”
Ti looked over the trembling man. “I’ve seen this before. Zed’s syndrome. One of the mardocs must have been carrying a neegue and injected him with it.”
The man wailed again. “No. Please. I’ll do anything you want. Please. Stop!”
Jewel folded her arms. “Maybe we should kill him.”
Little Sis was quick to jump to euthanasia. “Why?” Xander asked.
Tears pooled in Jewel’s eyes, but she quickly wiped them away. “Because he’s going to die anyway, and it will be a horrible death. At least you saved him from being eaten alive.”
“You’re tired,” Ti said and put a hand on Jewel’s shoulder.
She shrugged his hand away. “I’m fine.” She shivered, but her eyes dried quickly.
The man cried out again.

Praise from Ti always felt good. Xander's pale skin burned in the sun if he wasn’t careful. Ti's skin was his complete opposite and yet Xander knew Ti as father. Just as he knew this seventy-year-old in a child’s frame was his Little Sis, though if waking days equated birthdays, he was a toddler and she was an old maid. She sure acted like a twelve-year-old brat though.
Ti looked around. “I think we killed all the mardocs in town.”
“Except the shaman mardocs,” Jewel said. She blinked twice, looking like a child staying up for New Year's for the first time.
“They’re not a threat.”
Jewel rolled her eyes. She had no respect for Ti, but Ti had said he expected as much from her.
“What now?” Xander asked.
Ti watched the sleeping man. “I’ll carry him back to the train station. Laurel should have made preparations for the wounded by now. Hopefully, she found a healer. I don’t believe Samusgate has a hospital.”
“It doesn’t,” Jewel said. “Earth came too? Why didn’t your wife join the battle, Xander?”
The memory of Laurel’s cries after the last time she tried to use her earth power, sent shivers through Xander.
“She… isn’t ready for battle yet.”
“How long has she been out of her sleeper crystal?”
