For this poverty exercise, I utilized the Social Security Administration, USDA food and nutrition, and Access NYC websites. I learned that as a disabled person who is the head of household, and also unemployed, I would receive maximum federal payment of $733 in Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits on a monthly basis for the year of 2015. Annually this would be $8,804.43. I would also receive $357 monthly in food stamps (SNAP). Therefore my take home monthly income would be 1090 however the food stamps amount is non-cash with restrictions. Since I receive SSI, I automatically am eligible for Medicaid. My monthly living expenses excluding rent and credit card debt would be $912. My cash income of $733 from SSI does not even cover my rent. This amount definitely would not be enough to take care of a child and sustain a household. …show more content…
With the exception of cigarettes and liquor, these items are necessities in my household. I can’t imagine not being able to purchase them with my benefit card. I think it’s unfortunate that the government places restrictions on items that can be purchased with food stamps as I feel that household items are necessity items. In my opinion liquor is not a necessity so I can understand why a person who has food stamps disabled or not, can’t purchase it with food stamps.

The amounts for my budget were general amounts provided on SSA and USDA website for my household size. Unfortunately I was not able to get more accurate amounts, as that requires an actual application for these benefits.

Hernandez #216 at Marina Hall (located at 6515 Ocean Drive Corpus Christi which is on Texas A&M University-Corpus Christ) with talking with the neighborhoods. Upon arrival I activated body camera #5 and made contact with an individual by the name of Austin Lucero (student/resident) who lives next door in apartment #2121. I advised Lucero about the incident that occurred next door. I asked Lucero if he has been in his apartment all day, which Lucero advised that he arrived to his apartment a little before 1920 and was at the lobby area of the building until 1930 when he headed to the food truck and did not come back until approximately 2120 to the apartment.…

Amber, I think there is a misunderstanding/confusion on the agreed process, which it has not been implemented yet. If you might recall from our meeting, I stated that by August 1, I will create a new tracking file to capture (year out) the supplier transition plan for procurement led sourcing initiatives and critical VO initiatives (managed by Vito Biundo). In order to do this, I would use our sourcing calendar and the packaging engineering VO list. From a process perspective, the VO list is updated on a monthly basis by the packaging engineering group and the sourcing calendar by my team. To Bethany’s point, I have instructed my team to help Vito keep this list as updated as possible.…

Nicole was born with two holes in her heart and suffered from congestive heart failure before she was a year old. Because her family had no health insurance, Nicole would not have been able to have the life-saving heart surgery that she needed were it not for the efforts of a non-profit group who stepped in to cover all the expenses and heart surgeon, Dr. Denton Cooley, who waived all of his fees. Later in life, Nicole watched as her father, who was on Medicare after being placed on disability due to a back injury, experienced several heart attacks and underwent multiple surgeries.…

However, in the past, each state has controlled their own requirements for food stamp eligibility. This has created much controversy over the years. Food stamps were originally created to provide enough food to families and individuals in need. Unfortunately there are very few restrictions on the items that can be purchased with food stamps.…

This means that heads of households who are stuck working in full time minimum wage do not qualify for assistance since, on average, their annual income totals around $15,080 per household (Groves, Lee, & Strandberg, 2015). The lack of access to health care by these impoverished families only adds fuel to the problem of poverty since this basic need is not being met. Several attempts at health care reforms have taken place in order to fix /close the gap such as “Obamacare,” or “The Affordable Care Act.” Although this reform brought much controversy, it was able to expand care to families that were…

Since President Lyndon B. Johnson declared war on poverty in 1964 during his union address, there has been an increase shift in our attention in trying to lower the poverty rate in America. Today, the poverty line depends on how many people live in a household but these thresholds are too low and need to be higher. The poverty line should be a clear distinction that shows that if one is to be below it they cannot afford to pay for the all necessities in order to live. Living above the poverty line, even if it is just above, should mean that one can pay for bills that are necessary to live even if they are just making by doing this. While the poverty line has increased due to inflation in wages, what it has not accounted for is the increase cost in living.…

Introduction The author of Evicted, Matthew Desmond, exposes the restrictions those in extreme poverty may face daily. Based in Milwaukee Wisconsin, Desmond takes his readers into the lives of those living in poorly maintained housing where tenants experience health problems, eviction, and at times even death. The property owners are wealthy and thrive off profits made by those less fortunate, yet do minimal maintenance to preserve their rental units. The families residing in the rentals cope with roach infestations, poor plumbing, and broken windows.…

Programs such as SNAP need to be regulated, in that qualifying means to be drug tested and receipts sent in for auditing purchases. In regards to qualifying for social welfare, the “Current Population Survey (CPS) derives the official poverty rate by comparing incomes to the absolute poverty that was calculated back in the 1955 consumption patterns” (Cochran). This rate is absurd, when people apply for benefits the system “counts only cash income” (Cochran). In many situations a family may not qualify for benefits through income, but qualifies after deductions such as medical and healthcare costs, taxes and other work expenses. Too many are dependent on the government funding and decide to stay there.…

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the “official poverty rate in 2014 was 14.8 percent, which means there were 46.7 million people in poverty” (U.S. Census Bureau). Poverty is an important and emotional issue. To understand poverty in the United States, it is essential to look behind these numbers to see the actual living conditions of the individuals the government deems to be poor. The U.S. Census Bureau uses a set of guidelines to determine if families meet that poverty threshold.…
