Wyrick Summary Before people decide to write anything down, that person must have valuable ideas to tell readers: “For many writers, getting started is the hardest part” (Wyrick 3). Writers often keep journals to keep track of ideas and inspirations. There is a process that writers use to choose a subject. Sometimes a writer needs to find a happy place, a space where the writer feels most comfortable, to find the essay's main subject. It is important that the writer should have knowledge of the topic and wants to communicate these ideas clearly to the reader. Writers use different techniques to decide which subject to write on. Five mistakes to avoid when making the thesis are simply stating the topic, cluttering, being unreasonable, stating facts, and stating the thesis as a question. Some writers might often profit from using essay maps: “Many thesis statements will benefit from the addition of an essay map, a brief statement in the introductory paragraph introducing the major points to be discussed in the essay” (Wyrick 42). Essay maps not only introduce the main point of an essay but provide a set of guidelines for organizing the essay and helps keep the writer from wandering off into areas vaguely related to the thesis. Every sentence in a paragraph must support the topic sentence. The paragraphs must be adequately developed with clear supporting details. For a body paragraph to be effective, the author should avoid vague generalities. The four means to achieve paragraph unity is to make sure every sentence relates to the topic sentence’s main idea, avoid topic draft, beware the tendency to end paragraphs with new ideas, and the support sentences must support the topic sentence.
