World War II caused the deaths of many Jewish European citizens, soldiers who fought alongside the Allied and Axis Powers, as well as many civilians. Consequences for committing the atrocities that lead to the large casualties of Jewish European citizens needed to be implemented. As a result, the Allied powers decided that a criminal proceeding needed to be held against Nazi officials who could be held responsible for carrying out orders that lead to such war crimes during the war. These war crimes included the mass executions of Jewish Europeans, harmful medical experimentation, and the pursuit of creating a master race in Germany.
