What are the themes of war? There were over 17 million deaths and over 20 million wounded in WWI.WWI originally started because of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand the Arch Duke of Austria and from there it spiraled out of control. America entered the war in 1917, the war lasted from 1914 to 1918 First, one WWI literature theme is betrayal. To begin, there are many examples of betrayal in “War Horse” written by author Michael Morpurgo. For instance, Ted Narracott sells Joey, Albert Narracott’s horse to the army to pay off debt so they can keep their house and farm (War). Thus, even though Ted gave Joey to Albert, he choose to sell it for some quick money without talking to Albert. Secondly, there is betrayal in “flyboys” directed by Tony Bill, story by Blake T, Evens. Specifically, the mainly American group from Lafayette Escadrille were not allowed in to the military bar, even though they were fighting on the same side (Flyboys). Firstly, in “War Horse” there are examples of friendship. For instance, Albert was able to find his horse while fighting in the war (War). Conquenstly, he wasn’t able to see his horse but he called it and described what it looked like to his commanding officer. Secondly, even in “Flyboys” there are many examples of friendship. Specifically, when Rowling’s went back out and was almost killed by the Black Falcon but his friends saved him (Flyboys). As you can see, his friends risked their lives to help out their friend. Thirdly, there are numerous examples of friendship in “All Quite on the Western Front”. For example, Paul Braumer volunteered to go on patrol because he feels very close to the men in his group (Remarque). Therefore, Paul is risking his life to be with his friends. As you can see, friendship is a main theme in WWI
