It was the year 1914, July 28th; a "great" world war had erupted around the world and I wasn't sure why I joined the army but I did it anyways not knowing the outcomes and consequences. Furthermore, I was assigned to Regiment Fifty-Four, the regiment that is situated at the heart of the battle out on the front lines. The regiment was being deployed a week -from my sign up. Deploying in France. I was put on the front lines with a rifle in my hand, a few rations of food to last me a week because that’s the living expectations and a small diary. It was dreadful. The regiment’s objective was to capture an outpost in a small village, a small quiet village with no story to its name.
On the day of deployment, three members of the group had disembarked and left to join another while my members were all talking about how easy this objective would be and the snow wouldn’t hold them back. My regiment was placed at the foot of the village, every house was silent, empty building once homes of families, rubbish scattered along the street but a bakery that had all goods left inside. My colleagues ran like little children running towards an ice-cream truck. All hell broke loose as

"Bon voyage" I said as I pulled the pins out and let the grenades drift away with the wind. It was the loudest and brightest explosion I had ever seen. A black cloud of pure smoke had covered the village and moans could be heard up to a mile away. The enemy had started to clear out every house; it was not long before my presence would be known so I dressed up as one of them to fit in. Backup had arrived at the bottom of the village; bullets began to fly throughout the village. Bullets smashed the window I was looking out and my face had an open wound. The village was shouting louder than ever. Bang Bang. Soldiers dropped to the floor who was investigating my rucksack. I had to make it back to my uniform or backup wouldn’t be backup

Another example being Vera Brittain, who worked as a nurse at a Base Hospital, turned Casualty Clearing Station, in Etaples, France during the retreat in March 1918. Brittain described that during that month there were “gassed men on stretchers, clawing the air – dying men, reeking with mud and foul green-stained bandages, shrieking and withering in a grotesque travesty of manhood – dead men with fixed, empty eyes and shiny yellow faces…. Her world was a kingdom of death.” Brittain was living a nightmare that she could not wake up from, every day had an emotional toll on her which caused her to become isolated and went into a ‘state of numb disillusion.’ These women might not have had direct interactions on the firing line, but they did witness the immediate aftermath of shells, gunshot wounds, and gas hysteria which led to many acquiring shell shock symptoms.…

As I stared across the bullet-torn battlefield I wondered how I ended up here; hiding behind a crumbling wall, clutching my gun as though it were a lifeline. How the young kid I'd once been now bore a dirty, camouflage patterned uniform. There I was, contemplating my life in the middle of a battle. I shouldn't have been surprised when a hand suddenly shot out in front of my face and smacked me upside the head. It was so unexpected that I nearly stumbled out from behind the rubble and right into the bullet whizzing by.…

When the First World War began Australia and Britain were allies, British newspapers published appeals for young men to join colours, and to fight against Germany. Many men took on the challenge for a sense of adventure and making their country proud. As time went on Toby Thacker states that, ‘Over the next few weeks, thousands of young men came forward. When the first grim news of casualties and of the retreat from Mons arrived in late August, more volunteered, and after the fall of Antwerp in early October, there was a renewed surge. On some days, more than 10,000 men enlisted.’…

My foot fell asleep as I was crammed inside the dark closet hiding from them. I could hear the faint gunshots in the distance, yet, as time passed by, the gunshots became louder and louder. The gun smoke which leaked in through the walls, made me nauseous as it filled my lungs like a gas chamber. Though I dared not to cough, in fear that someone would find me. Nauseous and confused, I listened to them as they were all yelling something in German.…

The sky was engulfed with hopes and prayers of the soldiers that inhabited the wasteland below. Rain fell like pellets soaking everything it could reach. My clothes hung limply off my body, dripping with the water that was flowing from the grey stained sky. The mud that was once hard turned into slush in seconds and splashed everything as I attempted to navigate my way through the trench only using the few metres that I could see in front of me. The sounds of battle cries pierced through the fog, along with the explosions of guns firing bullets…
