When Heathcliff was brought by Mr. Earnshaw, it was apparent that Earnshaw preferred Heathcliff over his own son. Hindley realized that and began to feel hatred and jealousy towards Heathcliff. Before Catherine had any idea about social classes, she and Heathcliff spent a lot of time together. When she understood what social classes were, she gradually began to treat Heathcliff poorly, and Heathcliff was offended by her actions. Although Catherine saw Heathcliff differently than before, she still loved him deeply. Edgar loved Catherine as well, but he was everything that Heathcliff was not, and he was wealthy. Catherine had to decide on who she wanted to marry, whether it be Heathcliff or Edgar.
