Wrong To Volunteer

The United States was founded on the right to pursue happiness. To some people volunteering would not be an example of happiness. They might feel like doing something else with their lives. Everybody has their own definition of happiness. To some folks happiness would be having a big house, nice car, or to be financially stable. But maybe to others happiness is to serve their communty by volunteering, or giving their time to help others around them. Sara Mosle and Robert Coles are two individuals who become exposed to volunteerism because of specific circumstances yet they also encounter issues of extraordinary mismatch throughout their work. The term “mismatch,” has been applied to biological, psychological and social settings; regardless of the scenario, the outcomes of a mismatch can potentially do more harm than good. Mosle, a middle-aged white woman and journalist residing in a well off neighborhood in New york, becomes a mentor for several children from low-income communities. Coles, a white psychiatrist, pursues an in-depth study of school desegregation through observations of black youth organizations during the Civil Rights era. Mosle and Coles introduce themselves into spaces…

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

Volunteering not only helps socially in our communities, but also economically. I believe it helps economically because we could contribute to getting homeless people back in the workforce. In addition, many places that help people in need are more often than not on strict budgets, and I believe if people volunteer than perhaps those locations or agencies wouldn’t have to spend as much money on employees and instead have many rotating volunteers, this could also allow them to use funds for other urgent matters. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone.…

"It's every man for himself", a quote that I more or less went by. Truth be told, I wasn't always one to care about the wellbeing of the community. My wellbeing was my main focus. The thoughtof doing volunteer service never crossed my mind, until it became mandatory, in order to be inducted in the National Honor Society. After participating in a few projects and events, from what seemed to be a tedious activity turned out to be a rewarding experience.…

Volunteering Require for College Admission Most college students have difficulty finding a job because of lack of experience in their majors or fields. In “Volunteering Required,” Loretta Van Lear argues that it is necessary for the students to be required their volunteer careers in the majors or fields before starting college programs associated with those fields. However, this statement overlooked several points which are rebuttable against it. The most important consideration is that all jobs do not have volunteer positions.…

On December 6,1865,President Lincoln abated slavery stating that all slaves would be freed and no longer be forced to work for no reward. In our own country today, however, many students across the nation are being forced to do just that, work for no reward. In the article “Required Volunteerism;School Program Tested” by Michael Winerip, It shows that in just two schools alone,175 students are at risk of not graduating because they did not give in to the volunteer program. Didn’t we learn from our mistakes; just because we changed the name, doesn’t mean we changed the game! Volunteering is to go out of your way to help others, but this is just doing what’s required, and therefore, the practice of making kids volunteer for a grade should be stopped.…

America is founded on freedom and the choice to pursue happiness. Forcing its citizens to lose two years of their life to national service is detrimental to this free country. Therefore, a year of required national service is harmful to the lives and spirits of American citizens. In the spirit of volunteering the volunteer willing gives away their time and in some cases money, to help a cause.…

Volunteer Essay From bagging groceries at a local grocery store to helping animals in shelters, volunteering is everywhere. Nowadays, schools implement volunteering service hours as a requirement for graduation. And though there are many benefits to just volunteering in general, others find it unfair and should not be a requirement to graduate. I believe schools should not require volunteer service hours for students to be able to graduate.…

If only there would have been more people volunteering, then so much more people could have been helped. And if more people can be help, then the suffering on earth can be ease. The big problem is that everyone is so busy with their personal life that they forget about the importance of helping others. A positive aspect I saw was that those who were already volunteering were really dedicated and kind hearted. I believe they are making a big impact on every person they touched and made it a task to spread their kindness.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…

When the education system begins to mandate volunteering as a high school graduation requirement, or as hours needed to be cleared, the whole value of volunteering begins to diminish, ever so slightly. Volunteering is not meant to be a task that needs to simply be completed in order to fulfill a requirement, and if the state allows for education to endorse this, then there is little value left from students’ civic duties. Additionally, this is also shown in “Community Service Can Discourage Those Not Ready for Volunteering” when the article discusses the “state and local governments’ [need] for volunteers in the United States to make up for the losses [of eliminated public programs and services].” Again, this emphasizes that the concept of volunteering is slowly being lost, and in this case, it is merging with the concept of free labor, which undermines the true purpose of every human being’s natural moral duty: helping others. Moreover, in the University of Wisconsin-Madison News, Dennis Chaptman states that “resume padding is a symptom of the extraordinary…
