The film But I’m A Cheerleader. Directed by Jamie Babbit, focuses on a teenage girl who was sent to a conversion therapy camp because her parents and friends suspected that she was a lesbian. Once Meagan participates in the program, she embraced that she was a homosexual. The film sheds light on the wrong of gender roles by the participation in gender identity classes, the portrayal that sexuality was chose based on an event that happened, and explanations of how roles are supposed to shape one’s sexuality.
Gender identity classes were meaning to help each recruit understand what their gender meant in terms of society. Each recruit had to participate in activities meant for each gender to help become heterosexual. The gay young men chopped wood, fixed cars, and learned how to spit. While the females learned to sew wedding dresses, change diapers, and vacuum like stereotypical gender roles. One of the first steps in ‘True Direction’ was bringing awareness to exactly what homosexuality is. It was a considered a step closer to becoming a heterosexual when Meagan realized that she was lesbian. People who do not fit into the classifications of gender identity may be misunderstood and judged. The irony is that Mary’s second in command, an ex-gay, Mike, and Mary’s son both harbor their own inner frustrations.
