In literature there are many different genres of writing. Each genre represents a different writing style. When researching topics and writing essays it is important to follow the required format. There are three most common genres in English. The first one is Arts and Humanities and it follows the Modern Language Association (MLA) format. The next one is the Social Sciences and it uses American Psychological Association (APA) format. The last one is the Council of Science Editors (CSE) writing style and it is used for the Sciences. Throughout the semester we covered all three writing genres MLA, APA, and CSE, and they all follow a different format that compare and contrast with one another.
The first writing style is MLA format, which is most commonly used in the Arts and Humanities. Subjects such as the arts, English, philosophy and music all fall under Arts and Humanities. The humanities focus on the creative expression that revolves around the human condition. MLA is the most common writing style in English literature. Most of the papers written in college follow MLA format. The use of MLA format can protect those from plagiarism when writing. It is personally the easiest writing style.

The social sciences are psychology, sociology, anthropology, social work and criminal justice. APA and MLA format differ when it comes to citing specific sources for a paper. APA provides an abstract, annotated bibliography and a references page, compared to MLA, which uses a works cited page with all sources following that format. It is common to find facts, and statistics and data in scholarly articles using APA. Both Humanities and Social Sciences focus on the principle of human beings. Subjects like history fall in between Humanities and Social Sciences and depending on the requirements can use MLA or APA

During this summer session of ENGL101A, I have learned multiple ways to express myself through my writing. In fact, before signing up for this class, I did not know the proper way to compose an academic essay for a particular audience, and how to properly cite my sources. Nevertheless, after the short summer session, I am able to define my purpose and audience, analyze critically any piece of information, and write with proper citations and fewer grammatical errors with confidence. Through the short time of 5 weeks, I learned how to focus on my audience as well as how to define the purpose of my papers as academically as possible.…

“Development of disciplinary writing,” (Roozen, 182) the act of looking at a person’s literacies and seeing the improvement of writing. I found through my interview, of Tais Mitchell, that this literacy practice is true. First Tais and I talked about his everyday literacies (including social media) and how they have affected his writing and the development of his literacies. After that we discussed barriers that he has overcome in his life to become an improved writer. Next, Tais told me about the things that have best influenced his literacy skills to this day.…

The Process of Effective Writing Green (2011) states that APA and good writing is a long term process (p.69). The writing process has always been difficult for me. My writing has improved with the help of my instructors, online resources, and the college writing center. In order to write effectively at the graduate level, I will need to refer to the various writing resources that are made available. According to Green (2011)... graduate assignments need to reflect the appropriate level of critical thinking relative to the degree.…

Reflective writing as a genre allows for a combination of personal reflection and critical thinking all intertwined into one. I turned my reflection essay into a new reflection that focused on a different level of the education system that would allow for me to reflect on my first semester of college to back up my allegations against the school system. When attempting to revise my essay in a new way I reread my old one and found an interesting theme screaming out of the paper. It was saying, “high school and Regents did not prepare me for college.” I took the idea a little further and expanded it to the SAT, that is a similar testing style to Regents, that similarly did not prepare me for college, and through research I found that income status…

Genres are texts within the community. Texts include educational and professional writings, as well as examples of articles, journals, textbooks, and forms. Literary communication in social work comes from many different areas which often include psychology and sociology. One problem with social work being so close to other fields is the blurred lines in regards to the responsibilities of the fields which often intersect. Writings although similar are altered to fit the needs of social work.…

According to a study done by Achieve Inc. in 2005, fifty percent of students that graduate high school are not prepared for college-level writing (Santrock, 2011, 370). While this lack of preparedness roots all the way back to the beginning of learning how to write, a great deal of knowledge about becoming a better writer can be learned in high school English classes if the teachers apply different writing techniques. In chapter eleven of John Santrock’s textbook Educational Psychology and Sharon Zumbrunn and Keegan Krause’s article “Conversations with Leaders: Principles of Effective Writing Instruction” many best practices for teaching writing are given in hopes to provide teachers with numerous ways to teach their students to become better…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

One of the very first memories I had as a child was lying in bed at night and listening to my mom read stories to me. I would always have my pajamas lying in my bunk bed in my blue paint colored room. Every night before bed I would curl up next to her in bed and pick several books for her to read. As I got older, I would pick bigger, harder, and longer books to read.…

My writing process coming into junior year was quite flawed and would go moderately like this: I would try and start with some hook that at least sounded like it related to the topic I was assigned. I then added a thesis that did not sound like total trash that included exactly what I planned to discuss. As I wrote the rest of my essays, I would sometimes realize there was something I felt added to the argument’s appeal, and after adding it to the body paragraphs, I summed it up in a couple words and squeezed it into my thesis. That was about the maximum amount of revising I would do for my essays. My decently crafted essays contained simple diction with a few SAT words I remembered while writing thrown in awkwardly.…

For second genre is a scholarly article, performing a genre analysis introduces a person to writing within a specific language used by the scholars. Genre analysis of a scholarly journal helps us to ponder the parts of writing that work together in unity and to understand that research is part of an ongoing conversation. There are many other approaches to showing a genre analysis of a scholarly journal, or any genre for that matter. Academic textbooks present the abstract at the beginning of academic article. These patterns are widely accepted because they provide an immense sense of organization to the paper, while providing data that can be recognized as solid evidence. In other words, these established similarities allow researchers to obtain coherence, and find their own rhythm as a…
