Reflection On Improving My Writing Skills

Improved Essays
Personally, I intent on improving my writing skills to help ease the process of graduate school. My intention is to reach a level of writing where I can communicate my ideas more clearly. I know that writing (for example, a thesis paper) is a process, and that it involves more than one person (in the case of the thesis paper, a three-person thesis committee). This fact is apparent in books where authors acknowledge individuals who have contributed to their work. Often the author expresses her or his gratitude to the people who took the time to read or comment on his or her written ideas. This is the same process that I have encountered time and time again throughout my education. I turn in writing work and receive feedback from professors, which in turn allows me to make changes that help me get closer to a more finish product. At this point in my education I feel that I can express my ideas on paper well. Nevertheless, I know that there is always room for improvement, and that this improvement is gradual. There are times when I read some of my past writing work to see how I used to expressed my ideas. …show more content…
Typing is a skill that I have taking for granted over the course of my educational career. I was provided with some training in high school, but have distance myself from this training and in the process adopted my own typing habits (what some people call “pecking” the key board). I would like to begin taking a conscious approach to typing. I see the many benefits of typing well, that is, when all my fingers are in their right place working together. For instance, it allows me to focus on the ideas that I am attempting to communicate rather than on whether I am about to press the right key or not. Further, knowing how to use a keyboard properly can perhaps cut some time from writing. The muscle memory for typing properly is still there, I just need to make a conscious effort to retrain

Exercising My Writing Skills Writing is evolving by the day in the English language, in other words communication is evolving on the daily since writing is our main source of communication. Learning how to write the English language in an academic setting has been one of my greatest accomplishments as a scholar, despite the fact that, I am still learning new skills daily on how to improve my writing. Even though, I am not the best the writer, I have gained enough strength in my writing to separate me from the average writer. In other words, the best way to improve on something is by practicing, and that is a lesson writing papers has taught me. One of my greatest skills as a writer in my opinion is being able to expand on a topic.…

Having to apply what I learned from each essay has really helped me a lot. By learning to use MLA style to have a better look throughout my essays, and fixing unnecessary semicolon and using commas when needed to avoid run on sentences or fragments, as well as eliminating to-be verbs for shorter more detailed sentence, and how to use work or words that aren't mine correctly to avoid plagiarism. From learning all those things, it has totally changed my way of writing because the way I used to go about my written, is not even close to how ENGL 101 changed me to being a better writer than I was before.…

My teachers had us write down our notes for class and i would write in cursive. Usually i dont have such good memory but when i wrote my notes down i would be more likely to pass my tests in that class. It was easier to remember what i had just written other than having to go back and remember what we had just written. In the passage " Cursive Is a Good Brain Tool " the author states in paragraph 2 " writing by hand helps individuals remember ideas better than typing.…

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

I do all my school work on the computer, meaning I hardly write anything free hand. Except when it comes to free writing. I find it much easier to write free hand when trying to get my thoughts onto paper. When typing, it is difficult to write fluidly without being preoccupied with grammar and spelling mistakes. Due to the red, blue and green lines that appear all over the screen.…

I have also learned and demonstrated that I am capable of producing well written papers and essays In the past four years the areas of writing that I have been the most successful in are essays because I can quickly write on the topic, then compared to my ability to write with nothing to start off of. But over the past four years my ability has significantly increased, I have gone from starting sentences with the same word consistently, and making punctuation errors to making very few. I also had errors in my citations, explanations, and the amount of times that…

In the future and other essays I plan on improving my skills with more practice and a little more time in these categories, Based on past essays, work and feedback I will be explaining my opinion on my grade.
