I am impressed on how Frederick Douglass managed to learn to read and write through various stratagems. Frederick was considered “a slave for life”; he served the Hugh family for seven years. At his young age, Frederick had no proper education; his mistress first taught him how to read, until her husband made her realize the bad consequences of slavery when given education. Until then, Frederick had been prohibited to read anything, not even holding a newspaper. Still, I stand for the belief that each one, even a slave has the right for proper education.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

As demonstrated by both Peter Elbow and Donald Murray, an author’s approach to writing a piece, whether it is written freely or structured, changes the perspective the reader will take. The different methods followed to achieve their style will depend on the purpose of each writer’s piece. The pieces “Freewriting”, by Peter Elbow, and “The Maker’s Eye: Revising Your Own Manuscript”, by Donald M. Murray, both discuss how to create competent writing; however, Elbow sees writing primarily as a process, whereas Murray sees it as a tool for achieving an end product. The authors describe the goal of each strategy, as well as the benefits obtained from the different styles of writing. They also presented the criticism and changes used to improve writing…
