Reflective Essay About My Writing Skills

When this formal assignment was handed out I was truly worried. I had no idea what to write about. Thinking on the surface I thought that there was no precise purpose for writing, at least for me individually. To be blunt, writing is far from my favorite activity. However, as I sat down for a period of time and pondered deeply about the topic I realized just how important and vital writing can be in everyone’s lives, especially mine. At a glance, I believed that if my writing skills were above average that I would be able to find a decent job. Assuming that this basic skills would be all I need to succeed. After further evaluation, it struck me that in my intended occupation (engineering) it was absolutely critical to be an efficient writer. Overall, writing is a major necessity in my life and for my future. In my opinion, communication is the main underlining purpose for writing. Some may say, why do we write when we can just talk? One for creativity, writing an epic poem. The other was knowledge based, a research paper. Throughout my life, it appeared to me that I was a fan of writing open form, creative papers. However after writing both of these assignments, it surprised me that I actually preferred the close form, knowledge oriented paper. Although one of them is more appealing to me, I think it is important to incorporate both creativity and knowledge into life. Writing can be the best way to build both creativity and knowledge. These two writing assignments demonstrated to me how writing can increase my knowledge along with my creativity. The presence of knowledge does not kill

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

However, the main point is colleges should produce writers who can actually use writing as a source for their future jobs and the questions is how can they do that? For example, I want to major in biology. Even though I major in biology, writing would be important to become more successful in my future career. One good way would be giving students an assignment where they require them to write papers on subjects of their choice that have something to do with biology.…

Through the following three essays, “Why I Write,” by George Orwell, “Why I Write,” by Joan Didion, and “A Way of Writing,” by William Stafford, a reader can interpret the importance of writing in daily lives. The three authors discuss the significance of writing and it has impacted their personal lives. I was most compelled by Joan Didion’s “Why I Write” because of its ability to encourage everyone to develop an interest in he topic.…

My mind feels like a 1000 piece puzzle missing a piece. I can’t simply find the right words to say to start this paper. It is always like this when freewriting; the idea of freewriting in and of itself frightens me. Never able to put the words in my head onto paper in a way that it can be read eloquently by others. My hands start to cramp automatically at the idea of freewriting.…

To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

Writing helps translate exactly how I feel into words so that when others read my writing, they get a solid idea of how I feel and/or what my intentions are. Overall, writing is one of the best ways of communication when compared to just talking to someone. When you talk to someone in a casual way, your words aren’t going to be as organized as a causal paper would be. But, there 's also a downside to writing a letter to someone compared to speaking to them, because, when you speak to someone, you show emotion through facial expressions and gestures; a paper cannot show emotion very well, which is why text messages can be easily…

My Writing Style Lacks Spontaneity The given assignment for today’s paper is for me to break down and attempt to describe the thoughts I put into my particular writing process. Additionally I have been tasked to include within the essay any additional thoughts and / or opinions I have about both the effectiveness of my writing as well as possible ways I may be able to improve upon it. Now while some would find this a simple task and have no problems simply sitting down, hammering away at the keyboard and turning in their masterpiece, for me it is not that easy. In fact, since receiving this assignment, I have been mulling over mental outline after mental outline as well as all of the different arguments, pro or con, that I might make. It is for these reasons I believe one fault that could be pointed out in my writing process is the lack of spontaneity.…

Over the course of this semester I learned a handful of things about myself as a writer, that will help me develop as a more proficient writer over the course of my four years here. As a writer one of my strengths is backing up my argument with solid and concrete evidence that truly makes the reader believe what they are reading. Another area of my writing that I excel in is being able to process great ideas that follow the guidelines and the prompt. With that being said I have also seen that while the ideas may come with ease, I do have a challenging time with getting the ideas from my head onto paper in a manner that isn’t so disorganized that it makes the reader second guess themselves. Another shaky part of my writing comes much before the actual forming of sentences.…
