My [Un]changing Writing Process
There is a game called darts that is based on a point system: the closer you get to the center, bulls eye, the higher the score, with the highest score winning the game. The game is how I can describe my writing style this quarter. I tend to hit the outer edge only, without going any further to nail the bulls eye in the center. Throughout the quarter this is how I have come to judge my writing, I tried to hit all the points with all the darts in my hand. Based on what I’ve learned through exploring readings and writing assignments, my writing process has improve dramatically.

There were moments in my writing exam where it was difficult to follow with what was being said, the errors of grammar impacted the organization and understanding of my writing. From the feedback received, I made goals to help me improve my writing and also to help me receive a good grade in the class. My goals for writing throughout the course were deleting meaningless words, avoiding repetition, not using qualifiers such as “always” and “never,” and thinking about word choice and using it effectively. With the different writing assignments I had to carefully think about the audience and take them into consideration when brainstorming and writing drafts. A focus for my assignments was to have a paper that a reader can understand and know what I am trying to say or discuss without being confused or having to re-read sentences. For some reason I tend to write my introduction and then my conclusion without having done the body paragraphs. I tried to have a conclusion that ties all the main ideas and allowed the reader to review and reflect on what was in the paper and gain an opinion of that …show more content…
A system of using “Describe, Evaluate, and Suggest” (DES) was helpful in providing comments for the peer reviews. I had not use DES in my previous classes; however, we were required to provide effective feedback to our peers because it would help them and it our comments affected our grades. Doing peer reviews required an amount of time and throughout the course I was able to improve the DES comments that I was providing to my peers. In Peer Review #3 of Rhetorical Analysis Dr. Simon feedback was “not using DES.” A few days later for the Peer Review #1 of Position Memo and Annotated Bibliography her feedback was “made 2 great marginal comments (need to use DES consistently).” For Peer Review #2 of Position Memo and Annotated Bibliography the feedback was “made 2 marginal comments that were excellent.” I found DES to be extremely useful when providing feedback to other people because I was focusing in the content, evidence, sources, and rhetorical awareness just to mention a few

Writing has not been my favorite thing because it takes me ages to complete a single page paper. But for the second assignment, I started to write everything out without giving too much attention for small errors, and I am able to write a lot faster. Of course, my first draft is not as it used to be, but I can go back correct my errors at any time. In addition, my big problem was that I would always start from the beginning and work my way down. However, if I stalled on the introduction which I always tried to make it attractive, I would stop the whole and leave the work for later.…

In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. I really appreciated the feedback I would receive from my drafts from Professor Hedge. The draft feedback was always helpful and it guided me in the right direction on what she was looking for in the assignments. Peer workshops sometimes did benefit me but it depended on who my partner was and their interest in my essay. When I was partners with someone who was interest in what I had to say in my essay it helped. I noticed that majority of the time feedback I would receive from my classmates often times was similar to the feedback I would get back from my professor.…

For someone like me, a student for whom English is not the first language, it is often difficult to know the correct format and really express your true understanding of what you’re reading. I remember my English teacher used to talk about what the writing process meant, and I never understood until this day.…
