With no experience, it was going to take several months to make a quality paper, so I allotted time for research before I started brainstorming. The brainstorming process became an exercise in being honest with myself, as most of the stories in my essays were either fake or over exaggerated. Other scholarship winners seemed to have these extraordinary life stories which led me to believe they won because of their experience, not because of the quality of their writing.
Writing essays is a much more enjoyable experience these days now that I’ve corrected my past mistakes. Giving myself a much longer deadline to complete papers, and having a written to-do list for my writing process soothes the jittery, chest-tightening anxiety of putting together papers. I am spending a little more time on papers each week instead of quitting early to browse YouTube or Reddit. Figuring out ideas and losing contests still makes me grind my teeth in frustration, but overall it’s deeply satisfying to go through the self-discovery process of teaching myself something
