I started college with a little hope that it wouldn’t be as hard as everyone says. I started my first week and I already hard several difficult papers to conquer. I started my first paper due for my religion class, hours and hours of blood and guts spilled into this document and all that was produced were eight agonizing pages, littered with mistakes and just a terrible read. I turned in the paper knowing that my teacher laughed out loud with pure enjoyment. It was so dreadful to even look at that I submitted it without a blink of an eye and a sigh of relief came across my lips. I don’t know why I felt better, I just submitted a paper that would only come to bring this year of college more pain and sorrow. I know that college would have struggles …show more content…
The trademark woman on the cover, with the cloth “A” on her dress stared back at me with an almost taunting look as to tease me, as If she could read my mind because she knew I wouldn’t understand any of the words in between the covers of her adulterous story. Mr. Malcom assigned a paper where you had to choose a quote from the book and write a four page paper on that quote. I drug myself home to my computer and I sat down to begin my long and depressing paper. I jumped right into this atrocious essay without even thinking about an outline or brainstorming. I finished and a smile formed on my face and I jumped around my room in a happy dance because I was finally done, except, the paper was only 2 pages long. I stared at my computer screen, after a few hours had passed, and the two pages that were complete before were detailed, without mistakes and enjoyable and the last two, ruined the whole paper. Instead of taking the time and rewriting and revising, like Donald Murray Proposes in his essay, “Internal Revision”, I jumped right into submitting my paper that was littered with mistakes. According to Donald Murray, students are not taught in schools today revise and go back and rewrite papers. They are just so used to submitting whatever they wrote to the teacher that they just will do that whenever

I am interested in the Early College Academy because it is a great opportunity. I understand that I will have to do a lot more work here than in other schools because of the college courses, but that does not matter to me. I will still study and work hard for the duration of my time here. This is the only school in which I can knock off two years of college for free. I also like the schedule here and how it's shorter, but I understand that I will have to use the rest of the time for studying and that's alright for me because in order achieve one's goals one has to work hard and that's what I…

Since the first day, time has been flying really fast. Starting a fresh new day, meeting the same teachers and same old friends, I still cannot imagine that I am now a senior! In my senior year, there will definitely be a lot of challenges and obstacles for me to conquer, but I believe that as long as I do everything step by step, I can beat down the difficulties in this senior year. When I was in junior year, I often heard last year’s seniors told me how hard is it to come up with a senior project topic, and they kept on reminding me to start thinking of my topic and finding my mentors. Luckily, I had research method class last year, so I knew how to do my APA style references and I had many presentations experiences last year.…

During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

Three years elapsed, and with those years gone, so were my hardships. The start of my fourth year marked the turning point for me and what made my final year in high school a memorable one. Unlike the years prior where my opinion didn’t matter, my senior year was when I was finally recognized and praised for my abilities. I felt like I was an asset to the team rather than someone who was just taking up space. I was given first priority when the time had come to pick numbers.…
