Observation Report: The Cask Of Amontillado

Observation Report: Writing Assignment The writing assignment that I observed was a literary analysis that describes the theme of “The Cask of Amontillado” through his display of the main character’s motives. The students were instructed to provide specific examples from the text, as well as clear reasoning that explains and connects their evidence to their response. The day that I was there to observe the class the mentor teacher was finishing the unit by having the students write a five paragraph essay using a worksheet packet that they had been working on for the past several days. When the final draft is completed, she will use a PARCC rubric to assess the students’ papers. She still considers this a formative assessment because she sees the PARCC test as the summative assessment of the students’’ learning. The teacher did not have a copy of the PARCC rubric, but I was able to assess one online. It provides analytic scales similar to the scores displayed on page 235 in our textbook Inside Out. The rubric is measuring reading comprehension and written expression, and knowledge of language and conventions. She did not share the rubric with the class prior to giving the assignment, but she does plan on discussing with the class some of the areas that will require more practice. Unfortunately, I was unable to review the graded papers because the students were not finished with the assignment prior to this observation report’s due date. Once all of the drafts have been turned in, I will ask the teacher if I may review the students’ work and analyze how she is grading each paper using the rubric. I hope to learn how to interpret the rubric and apply it to actual students’
