Shirley Jackson story The Lottery, was an interesting read but did not give an understanding of what the lottery represented. It’s understood the lottery is a tradition that has taken place in the villages and surrounding towns for centuries but there are too many unknowns. The entire story is surrounded by the lottery which the reader knows nothing about. Reading the story led the reader to believe the lottery represented a reward for the family who selected the winning ticket. Then midway through the story the author gave the impression it was a ritual practice. At the end of the chapter that belief is dissolved when the woman and little girl participated. If I rewrote the story I would give the readers an understanding
