Writing Assignment 2: Interest Group Spending As an employee for an interest group that represents energy companies that are opposed to the North American Energy Freedom Act, which prohibits the construction of oil and gas pipelines between the US and Canada and the US and Mexico. I’ve been asked by the oil and gas companies, who are members of my organization to work with congress to defeat the bill. In order to convince the remaining 25 republicans in the US House of Representatives to support my position, I have comprised a strategy, in which I will use the money from my budget to hire a lobbyist, do advertisements, along with producing a grassroots internet campaign. With my 1.1 million budget, I plan on hiring a lobbyist, “referred mainly to an individual sought to influence the passage of legislation in the congress”.(451) This is ideal given that our sole purpose is to influence the remaining 25 republicans on the US House of Representatives to side with our position on this stance. My strategy to persuade government officials to side with my interest group is to use my budget to hire a quality lobbyist, set up a grassroots campaign, and invest in newspaper and television ads. I’ve decided to pay extra for a quality lobbyist rather than save money and get a bargain lobbyist solely because my budget is enough to afford what is necessary to convince government officials to side with my interest group and I think it’s better to spend more to get a more certified lobbyist who will go out of their way to influence government officials to support our viewpoint and get the bill
