Writing Activity: Bio- Poem

Today students will make a bio-poem using the content in this lesson over people in early Indiana such as the Mississippian people, Rene-Robert Cavelier, Pontiac, or George Rogers Clark.

This is a simple poem written about a person and their life. The class will use the lesson in the book to find out information about one of these people. Students will work with a partner to brainstorm ideas such as adjectives to describe the person, the relationships they had with others, where they lived, and accomplishments. Students will create a poem with these facts. The teacher will create an example poem for the class to see how the writing activity should be completed.

The short poem by Billy Collins “Care and feeding” is a story I can connect my personal life experience with. The narrator therefore seems to be a human, who either considers himself a dog or feels like one. While reading the story, I was thinking about how selfish the narrator sound. Because he’s turning 420 years old in dog age then that’s when he decide he wants to be a dog. After living his life on earth enjoy everything he possibly can, now the only thing left for him to think about is how he wants to become a dog because he feel old and lonely.…

In the beginning of the poem, Bradstreet is sleeping during a calm and quiet night, and then suddenly, she wakes up by “thund’ring noise / And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice” (lines 3-4). She then sees that her house is burning in fire. Terrified, she cries out to God and prays so that God would help her. Her house eventually got entirely burned up, and Bradstreet ended up homeless, but she did not lose hope. More traditionally poetry is used to share details of a poet’s thoughts, emotions and views on different things that he or she has experienced. The author of the poem “Sixteen”, Chelsea Rathburn, seems be using it to share experiences she has had facing motherhood as a single parent but Chelsea then explains that it is a persona, kind of like a fictional narrative. Chelsea is a creative writing professor at Young Harris Collage and is marred to James Davis May. Together the couple had a child named Adelyn; it is very simple to assume that she has the experiences in the poem, since it is about a daughter and a mother just like her and her daughter, but when interviewed Chelsea explains otherwise.…

After listening to Serial, a podcast based on the awaiting trial of a high school star Adnan, I believe that he is guilty of killing his, at the time, girlfriend Haemin Lee. First of all, Adnan doesn’t anything specific from that afternoon. If anyone got a call from the police saying that your friend is missing, you would definitely remember every detail of what happened that day because it is not something that you can just forget. Just to add to that, if your friend is still missing the next day, you would go over all of the specifics with the people that youre both friends with to try and put together every piece of the story. So to me, that makes absolutely no sense.…

This past Thursday I attended the Hearst Center to view Crystal Gibbens as she read a few of her own works. Through my observations, I identified that Crystal was originally from a small town. Through her readings, she expressed her teenage-desires to leave her hometown and expand her experiences of different places. She later explained she was raised in Washburn, Wisconsin. She explained that many of her poems were reflections on events in her life.…

Dr. Randolph’s class was a celebration of literature and discourse. The texts selected by Dr. Randolph helped me explore my own identity. Also, Dr. Randolph assigned a variety of classic poems and modern literary texts for the purpose of promoting discourse in small groups. By promoting discourse, students are not just reading a text. Instead, Dr. Randolph encouraged analysis of the texts on a personal and societal level through class discussion and writing assignments.…

Since my high school Creative Writing class will be an elective class that will consist of students in tenth through twelfth grade, I will need to find ways to bring student fun into the learning as much as possible. I have found that students love to eat and socialize, so I will include food, props, and games whenever possible. Difficulty will occur as the norm for class size at my school is thirty-two to thirty-six students, and not all students want to be in the classes where they are assigned. Since a text will not be available for the students, handouts and overhead projections of terminology and examples of writings will be needed. Keeping the class light and the learning fun and engaging at all times will be my goals.…

The poems I experienced reading during this class allowed me to understand poetry to a newer level. Prior to this I feared poetry and reading it based on experiences of high school and the disaster of trying to learn, here I was able to bring myself to accept and actually understand what I was actually reading. I was able to relate or understand the writer’s link to personal experiences into my own life. This experience was more enlightening making the learning process that much enjoyable; taking that major dislike away. Some of the poems that I enjoyed reading or having a personal experience similar to the poem were Do Not Go Gentle Into the Night, similar to my experience as a teenager and my grandfather’s death, as he was my idol growing…

One Writer’s Beginnings Essay In the excerpt of One Writer’s Beginnings, Eudora Welty’s descriptive language helps her convey the intensity and value of her experiences with reading and writing. Welty uses many descriptive words, such as when she mentions Mrs. Calloway’s “dragon eye.” Her use of the word dragon causes the reader to imagine a very watchful and interrogative eye.
