Throughout high school I was never asked to write anything other than a persuasive or informative essay. These essays focus on facts and are used to persuade the reader to believe in your argument. Because of this I experienced a few challenges with writing my memoir. Dialogue was one of my biggest challenges, learning how to correctly format and incorporate it was difficult. With help from the documents online posted to D2L, I was able to affectively incorporate dialogue into my paper, “Hurry throw me a towel! The water is freezing!’ he yells while running over to where I am sitting.” I learned a new paragraph is need whenever dialogue is used to show someone is talking. The use of internal dialogue was also something I learned to do, this showed the reader my thoughts within the memory. Although the drafting phase is relatively the same from paper to paper, I struggled with it in the memoir. I had trouble with thinking of a memory to write about, and figuring out what to include and not to include. I learned how to properly incorporate dialogue into my paragraphs. I also learned that you need to take in consideration the audience reading the paper. By looking at your memory from an outside perspective you are making sure to include others who are unfamiliar with the topic. This can apply across all my other writings because now I am more aware of the reader. I also learned good writing differs from style of papers, in a memoir it is acceptable to use I, you, me… which is not the same for informative or persuasive essay. A well written memoir has to include I because it is a first-person encounter. This will help me with future papers that are to be written in first
