My development as a writer and the development of this piece was impacted by the exploration of the writer’s notebook, the learning outcomes of this course and what I have learned about writing from others.
The Writer’s Notebook At first, I struggled with allowing myself to dig deep into the writer’s notebook. When I read the writing invitations the first week, I found myself just responding to it like a prompt or the reflective papers I spend so much time writing in my graduate classes, there not a lot of thought and depth going into the writing, it was safe. Soon, when I looked at the writing invitations, I began jotting down thoughts, much like seed ideas and then I began to play around with a thought I liked. I wrote poems and in writing invitation #3 I thought about winter as a person. I decided a short a little piece from the perspective of winter and what the poem made me think of when I read it. Then, when I went back through my writer’s notebook, looking for what I would like to develop for my final writing piece, the re-read the entry. The way I wrote it and the way it flowed made me think it would work better as a poem, so I re-worked the text into a poem. I also thought about playing with the words to express meaning, so I bolded and italicized the emotions that Winter was feeling. I played around with letters and underlining to show the differences in the emotions and the journey she takes through the seasons. The message that stood out to me is that students need to feel like writers, and this has something that I have struggled with. When you feel like a writer, you are able step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. Writers who feel like writers can step outside of themselves and analyze their writing, documenting both strengths and weaknesses. They can read, think critically about it and try again. Writers who see themselves as writers, feel free to make mistakes and use them as an opportunity to
