“Easy money, bro. Easy money,” Those words resonated through my mind on my first day as a Wendy’s employee. It was at that moment when I realized how easy life was when I was working at Dillard’s. Those words, that now taste bittersweet, came from my former coworker, Hector. He and I used to work side by side at the clothing department store Dillard’s, and every time I had the chance to work with him, he would always say the same thing, “Easy money, bro. Easy money.” I had not really given it too much thought as to what he meant by that until I began working here at Wendy’s: flipping burgers and serving fries. I now realized how much I took my job at Dillard’s for granted. I now know what many people mean when they say that you do not really know what you have until you lose it.
My story at Dillard’s begins on October 2014. I was hired as a dock associate for the women’s building. Some of my responsibilities included sweeping and moping the floors, delivering merchandise to the sales floor, changing out the trash bags, among other maintenance duties. The incompetence of the morning crew did not bother Rick at all, even if I complained to him about it. Every night before leaving work, I would leave Rick a note asking him to change my schedule. You see, I was working Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. In my notes, I would ask him to give me a Saturday or Sunday off, as I wanted to go out and hang out with friends. No matter how many notes I left him, I would never get a response from him. I even sometimes confronted him about the schedule, but his only response would be, “I will look into it.” Obviously, as you might have guessed, he did not do anything about it. I eventually became fed up with it. So I finally decided to follow Hector’s
