The National Safety Council reports that cellphone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes a year. One out of four crashes in the United States is caused by texting and driving. Studies show that 11 teens die every day as a result of texting while driving. Many states are prohibiting texting and driving by putting a law into place. As cellphone use and driving becomes a national problem, the chances of being involved in a car accident with a distracted driver increase. Millennials are more likely than adults to be texting while driving. Teen drivers are actually four times more likely than adults to get into car crashes or near-crashes when on a cellphone. Phones can be a useful tool in the car for directions but also a deadly distraction to most. When in the car, driving should be the main and only focus; however, too many drivers believe that checking a text for a moment is harmless. In reality, just taking your eyes off of the road for a second could potentially cause an accident. There are new tools installed in cars to allow you to talk on the phone hands-free through a Bluetooth system. Even though new gadgets may be helpful, they are still distracting. Self-discipline is another tool to help eliminate texting while driving. When in the car, completely shut off all devices, therefore, extinguishing all distractions. Another way is to keep the device out of sight; for instance, in the trunk or glove box. Implementing this procedure, the phone can only be reached when parked. An additional way is to download an app on your phone that doesn't allow you to access anything while driving. The final way to reduce the desire to text and drive is to lock your phone with a password that reminds you not to text and drive. One in five drivers text while driving.
