Write An Essay On Modern Thanksgiving

The first Thanksgiving was in 1621. It all started when Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast with Pilgrims from Plymouth. That feast is now known as Thanksgiving. Most people now celebrate a more modern Thanksgiving. Everyone celebrates Thanksgiving differently. We still celebrate what we are thankful for but we do that in different ways. One thing modern Thanksgivings have in common is we eat similar food. The food we eat that is similar is turkey and Pumpkin pie. Some other stuff that is the same is that some people cook for their families. Some people could do some modern day stuff for Thanksgiving too. Some people are allowed to have a cup of alcohol witch I don't think they should be allowed to. Also some people …show more content…

The first person I asked was Dezmyn Abbring, a student at Kankakee Valley, about how he would usually spend his Thanksgiving. Some things he said that were unique were that he goe down to Tennessee to visit relatives. Another would be that he usually watches sports while he eats Thanksgiving dinner with his family. When the Pilgrims and the Indians had their Thanksgiving, they didn’t…

One ritual my family experiences is having an early Thanksgiving dinner and watching the Dallas Cowboys game. The tradition starts late on the night before thanksgiving. We start by ordering pizza, and then we begin prepping dinner for Thanksgiving Day. My sister and I prepare the side dishes, while my mother, aunt and grandmother make all the main dishes and desserts. We usually stay up all night finishing dinner prep, watching television, and cracking jokes.…

If there is no turkey on the thanksgiving table, people will wonder where it is and say things like, “It isn’t Thanksgiving without turkey!” Southern families will traditionally have sweet tea in their homes, especially when the holidays come around each year. When it is time for a family holiday, it calls for almost the entire family to show up. Since it is Christmas time, the Southern people will cover their houses in lights, put the Christmas tree up with decorations, and…

Have you ever noticed how in the stores you will see a plethora of Halloween costumes, decorations and the like but immediately following Halloween, you see Christmas themed decorations all over and very little to commemorate Thanksgiving? The most I've seen have had leaves and maybe a cornucopia and really only enough scattered throughout the store to fill a half to one whole aisle. It seems that our national holiday is only truly named and observed within "leaked" black friday ads, alerting you to when the advertised deals start. This never really bothered me in the past. As a little girl Thanksgiving was all about the Macy's Parade, the dog show, food, and the countdown until santa claus and presents galore.…

I had absolutely no idea what they were saying, but I stood there smiling and laughing. The problem with being a first-generation American is that there is always a sense of isolation. Isolation from your peers because of cultural differences, and isolation from your family because of cultural differences; I was always stuck in the middle. At age four, my family and I moved from Hong Kong to America, and I quickly assimilated to the culture here.…

Last November, a week before Thanksgiving, I was listening to the morning radio talk show The Woody Show and the hosts were talking about how excited they were for the Thanksgiving feast. They all went around and shared what was their perfect meal for that day. It ranged from fried turkey, to stuffing, cornbread, green bean casserole, and towards the end the hosts argued about cranberry sauce. However, they all agreed that pumpkin pie was essential to the perfect meal. I found it very interesting that while they argued about the way the meal was executed, they all agreed on the basic components to the meal-I didn’t.…

There are many varied interpretations, perceptions, and feelings regarding one of the most recognized holidays in the United States. Today, it appears many people face the professional and moral dilemma of just how to be honest and informative about the true nature of Thanksgiving without passing on historical distortions, and racial and cultural stereotypes. The problem is that part of what many feel they have learned in childhood about the Pilgrims and indigenous Indians and the 'First Thanksgiving ' is a mixture of both history and myth. There are those that take the meaning of Thanksgiving purely on face value while others decry the holiday as one that bespoke the imminent demise of Native Americans. I would like to think however, that the theme of Thanksgiving has truth and integrity far above and beyond what we and our fore bearers have made of it.…

My grandpa teaching me to be patriotic taught me that to be thankful for living in a free country were people put their lives on the line for me. Lastly, my parents making me work for what I want taught me to be thankful for the things they do buy for me and that I need to take care of them. My family always had numerous different occasions in which when we gathered together to share memories and enjoy each other’s company. A holiday without family is not nearly as special as a holiday with our families. In my opinion, spending time with the older generation is a crucial element for our generation, the lessons are endless and it gives us a chance to see life in a different perspective and respect the simple things in life. My family and I get together for any and all occasions, my grandmother is the best cook I know and that only makes living next door to her and my grandpa that much better! We celebrate the obvious holidays such as: a white, snowy Christmas, our turkey filled Thanksgiving, a ball dropping New Years, fire work…
