This disease was first recognized in 1871 by Theodor Leber, a German ophthalmologist. Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy is an inherited form of vision loss that is inherited from the maternal side of the family. This disease is extremely rare. Symptoms usually start during early adulthood. At this time due to the rarity of the disease there is no cure or one hundred percent efficient treatment for Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy. However it is believed that cutting out things like smoking and drinking are ways to manage and ease the symptoms of LHON.
