History discussion. Because I wanted to sleep at that point rather than read a dry packet about Jamestown, I vowed to avoid that book. It wasn't until later that I decided to pick the book up and read it, mostly because everyone was raving about how amazing it was. While I was aware that injustice did exist in U.S. History, the plight of the underdogs was merely treated as a footnote. This book opened my eyes to the systematic oppression of these underdogs in society. I learned about the historical struggles of the Native Americans, the lower and middle classes, women, communists, and members of the LGBT community. The government will not always be there for the people. People will take advantage of ignorance to benefit themselves. This was one of the few history books that placed less focus on the leaders and the societal elite and devoted time to the oppressed. I gained another layer of insight about American history which had a tremendous impact on my current
