At home, Nina only sees more delusions. She sees Beth’s bloody face, she hears her drawings screaming at her, and even watches as her body transforms before her. She violently scratches at her skin. Suddenly, her skin develops goose bumps, her eyes turn red, and her knee joints fall back like that of a swan. Her mother is trying desperately to open the bedroom door to held her, but Nina slams the door, breaking her hand. Though her mom was only trying to help, Nina’s unstable mind causes her to have a melt down and even hurt her mother. She wakes up to her mother holding her lovingly, covering her hands with soft socks to stop Nina’s scratching. Her mother tries to stop her from leaving for the ballet, but Nina has come too far. Nina announces the “sweet girl” she once was is now gone, she is now the “swan queen” (Aronofsky 2010).

I suffer deeply from dermatillomania, and have always been a perfectionist. Though I’ve never suffered delusions, I do struggle with dissociation, another form of psychosis. Losing the grip of reality only causes me to dig deeper without even realizing. Feeling desperate, I decided to join a Facebook group dedicated to those with dermatillomania. On this page, many brave individuals share their story along with their skin. At first, it surprised me how, when I looked at their public profile, I only saw perfect woman. Woman who I would never guess to struggle from dermatillomania. However, it makes sense now that I have taken into account the association with dermatillomania and perfectionism. I do believe it’s my need for perfection that causes me to rip holes into my face in an attempt to get rid of my imperfections. I was more than impressed by the depiction of dermatillomania in Black Swan. Watching the film made me emotional but so very grateful that dermatillomania is out there, and awareness is being
